Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550) -- Dick Jauron's record in his last 19 games as coach of the Bills was 5-14. It's amazing Ralph Wilson let Jauron keep his job after ending last year 2-8. What amazes me more is he was ever hired by Marv Levy in the first place. He was a failure except for one season in Chicago and he was a failure as interim coach of the Lions. Three straight 7-9 seasons should have told Wilson everything he needed to know, but he jumped the gun last year and gave him a contract extension after a 5-1 start. Since Jauron showed since the day he walked onto the Bills sideline that he was a very poor game day coach, Wilson showed just how out of touch he really is by handing out an extension based on six games. Had he waited until the end of the season, he could've saved himself about 7.5 million dollars.
I totally disagree that Jauron is the worst coach in Bills history. Folks who make that argument forget about Harvey Johnson, Hank Bullough, Gregg Williams, John Rauch and Mike Mularkey.
This move can only be a beginning. John Guy has to be the next out the door. His evaluation of pro talent has been an embarrassment. Tom Modrak does not have a good enough draft record to stay. Russ Brandon can be team President, but a football man must run the football side of the organization. Only after changes are made in the people bringing the players in can this team move forward. A safety who has never played LB should never start while two healthy linebackers sit on the bench. Draft choices are moved from their college positions. Jim Overdorf does contracts. That's his job. His days of cutting players without the coaching staff knowing has to be over. Everybody's job needs to be defined. Running the Bills by committee has not worked and will not work.
The question now is how much is Ralph Wilson willing to spend to bring top notch people in? History tells us it won't happen. He did bring in Chuck Knox who had a good track record and he did bring back Lou Saban. He lucked out with Bill Polian and John Butler. He lucked out with Marv Levy who was a losing coach in Kansas City. Tom Donahoe had a track record in Pittsburgh, but he ruined the organization before he was fired. My guess is inexperienced front office people and coaches will be brought in hoping they find the next big thing. My guess is that will work one day, the question is which one?
