(WGR 550) -- WGR is keeping a database of opinions on the Bills hirings and firings in this space, and will continue to update it as guests join The Howard Simon Show all Wednesday morning.
HUB ARKUSH, PRO FOOTBALL WEEKLY
"You want to talk to a Mike Holmgren, more likely a Bill Cowher or a Mike Shanahan, and see if they have any interest in just being a general manager," Arkush said.
"You had the very best in the business with first Bill Polian and then John Butler," Arkush said. "They had an incredible football coach in Marv Levy. The biggest failure for Dick Jauron, who is an excellent football coach, was the uncertainty with how the football organization was run."
"Those 7-9 records, at the least the first two years, were more about over-achieving than anything else," he said.
"They've got to have some stability at the top of the organization if they are to have any success," Arkush said.
MIKE LOMBARDI, NATIONAL FOOTBALL POST
"There's a lot of guys I'd have in mind. Ultimately it comes down to making sure you get the guy who understands the philosophy. Maybe Leslie Frazier wants to run the Tampa Two scheme, but the Tampa Two scheme is not going to work in Buffalo with any guys. Pittsburgh has done this. They have a philosophy of who they want to be. It becomes the Pittsburgh Steeler way, or the New York Giant way. You need the Buffalo Bill way."
"You have to have a quarterback with the ability to cut the wind with his arm," he said. "Then, you've gotta build a physical team that run the ball when it has to."
YAHOO! SPORTS' JASON COLE
"I would suspect they would stay with what they know, and I can't say that's wrong," Cole said, pointing to the lack of multiple-team Super Bowl-winning coaches. "No coach has won an NFL championship with a second team since Weeb Eubank. I think you're just as well served finding a young and competent coach who knows what he's doing."
"If you're talking about a football guy in the Parcells role as overseer, obviously there's Ernie Accorsi. Ron Wolf would be great to bring in, but he's been out of it for the better part of 10 years. It's hard to find those guys. They are unique people who think they can step back from the day-to-day operations."
"As far as general managers, the No. 2 guy with the New York Giants -- I can't recall his name -- is a really good hire. Russ Brandon is a really good guy, but he didn't come up through the football side, and that's what you need to have."
"You can pretty much get whoever you need to get, and (Buffalo) is not the problem," he said when asked about whether Buffalo is an attractive option.
ADAM SCHEFTER ON ESPN
Why Jauron was fired: "Their team got flipped off by the owner of the Titans, Bud Adams," Schefter began, pointing to the team's 41-17 loss in Tennessee this past weekend. "They got embarrassed and Ralph Wilson obviously felt that the time had come to make a change."
On Perry Fewell: "He's a bright young assistant coach in this league," Schefter said.
On the direction the team will take: "I think it's a question of whether the Bills are going to go out and spend the money it would take to bring in one of the top names," Schefter said. "And I don't think right now that Mike Holmgren or Mike Shanahan or Bill Cowher is looking to go to Buffalo with all due respect to that particular franchise."
"Buffalo has been able to attract some good coaches before. Wade Phillips has been there, Gregg Williams has been there, Dick Jauron has been there. Good men, all. Very good men, and some people feel the Bills should've never released Gregg Williams from that job. I think that's the type of coach that we're looking at the Bills bringing in. They've had a history of promoting coordinators (Williams, Phillips, Jauron)."
PAUL POSLUSZNY WITH ESPN'S TIM GRAHAM
"What we have to stress is that this is an opportunity," Posluszny said. "There's no time to be depressed or be upset. We have to play the Jaguars on Sunday. This is a change that we have to make work for us. We can't sit back and say 'What if?' or 'I don't know.' We have to get ready to go and get ready to play a game."
ESPN'S TIM GRAHAM
"Jauron and the front office have committed a series of missteps. They fired offensive coordinator Turk Schonert 10 days before their season opener. Terrell Owens is on his way to having the least productive season of his career, making his addition little more than a publicity stunt."
"They're no closer to knowing who their quarterback is. Trent Edwards appeared to be the clear-cut starter but may have lost the job to Ryan Fitzpatrick."
"They misjudged their talent on the offensive line, thinking they were fine at tackle after trading two-time Pro Bowler Jason Peters and moving veteran Langston Walker from the right to the left. Walker didn't make the 53-man roster."
PRO FOOTBALL TALK'S MIKE FLORIO
"The Buffalo Bills introduced interim coach Perry Fewell on Tuesday night via a brief press conference at team headquarters.
Asked to explain his football philosophy, Fewell was concise: "Play like hell and win."
We already like this guy.
Fewell called the job an "opportunity of a lifetime," but he declined to talk about whether owner Ralph Wilson has indicated that the opportunity could extend beyond 2009.
As to the offense, Fewell plans no major changes. "We are who we are," he said.
NFL.COM's JASON LA CANFORA
"The Bills' defense under Fewell has shown a resilient quality, though the numbers don't always show it. The unit's best season under Fewell was last year, when it finished 14th in the NFL in yards allowed despite missing numerous players to injuries."
