Sports Illustrated’s Peter King offered his views on the Bills coaching situation Friday. King seems in agreement with other experts, the writing was on the wall.
“I’m surprised a little bit by the timing, but not by the firing of Dick Jauron. You started to think that Ralph Wilson was getting impatient.”
King couldn’t predict who the Bills would hire as coach in 2010.
“A lot depends on the pool of teams that have openings at the end of the year. Mike Shanahan is the number one guy out there, especially now that Jon Gruden won’t coach.”
Shanahan seems to be the name at the top of Buffalo’s list, but he’s not a perfect candidate. Last year, his team blew a four game lead in the division.
“Pat Bowlen got tired by every season ending the same. He got sick of the good offense, then getting beat 900-nothing in the last month of the year. He owed him 21 million over three years, but was willing to pay it because he got sick of watching the same bad movie. I believe Shanahan has changed a bit. He’ll go to the 3-4 defense. He studied the Steelers defense, and I think his defense will be better.”
So what do the Bills do?
“Wait until the end of the year and do a lot of interviews. They should interview Mike Zimmer. He’s been around Parcells and a lot of good coaches. Don’t think because you don’t get Mike Shanahan or Bill Cowher that you’re going to stink.”
