Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band played the HSBC Arena and if the rumors are correct, it will be the last show the "band" will play. While Bruce's wife Patti was not there, the rest of the band delivered an unbelievable performance that drove a sellout crowd in Buffalo to its feet. What does that have to do with the Bills?
Admittedly, this article is written by a Bruce Springsteen fan and although you could search many articles to find what song he played and how well the songs sounded, I can guarantee you this is the only one that will try to draw a sports comparison.
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band played for nearly 3 1/2 hours and left the crowd wanting more. It was amazing to see and hear a crowd disappointed that they wanted more after that length of time. If you have the time, close your eyes and think of the last time you were thrilled by the Bills for more than 3 1/2 hours.
I wish there was an easier way to put this but one man and his band should not "do better" than command the attention of Western New Yorkers. All weekend long, I heard the same question, are you going to the concert Sunday night? This was the same weekend that a new coach patrolled the sidelines for the Bills. We all know how important the Bills are to Western New York but it is time they started to matter again past November.
Bruce Springsteen could have chosen many other cities to serve as his finale to his tour for his most recetn album but I think he chose Buffalo for a reason. I think he wanted to tell the people of Western New York that they still mean something to him. That his music (including 2 covers of Pete Seeger songs about Western New York) should tell people that they should never give up - no matter how hard it gets.
I am definitely taking a leap of faith in writing that last statement. However, I used to live in New York City and New Jersey and I'll be glad to take a guess beyond what others might say. His songs have always been about a brighter future and hope...if you can make the effort. If you don't believe me, do a quick search for the songs he played in Buffalo and then e-mail me. I'd love to hear your comments.
In the meantime, think about this: Who took more time to make Buffalo a destination for fans. Bruce Springsteen by ending his tour in Buffalo Sunday night, or the Bills floundering through a disappointing season.
Thanks for reading this leap of faith and for listening to WGR - Sports Radio 550.

Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuce
Smith or Springsteen, please buy my beloved New York State Buffalo Bills and keep them in New York (no more giving away home field advantage in Toronto!).
Great article, Andy. It gives us hope ... and maybe some change(s) we can believe in!
