Kaleta suspended by the NHL.

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550)  -- After this morning's skate Lindy Ruff and Pat Kaleta went upstairs for a conference call with the NHL. The RW got two games for yesterday's hit on Philadelphia's Jared Ross which put Ross out of the game. Kaleta hit Ross with his back turned and drove his head into the glass. Kaleta got a major boarding penalty and a game misconduct. Ross never returned. Kaleta will lose $5,414.50.

Craig Rivet skated this morning after crashing into the boards last night. Ruff said, "The good news on him is he isn't as bad as first indications looked like." He won't quite be ready for tonight against Carolina.

Paul Guastad left last night's game with a knee injury and will miss a few weeks. Ruff said, "Paul looks like early indications will be in the couple week range."Gaustad has put up six goals in 20 games which would have him on a pace for 25 this season. He's been a force in front of the net and is enjoying his best season. His head coach agrees, "I think so, there's been some game where his will has been something that has outshone the other players. From a physical front, just taking the faceoff reigns and running with it, pushing the other centermen to be better which has been a big part of our game." Gaustad is second in the NHL in faceoff percentage at 63.6 percent. Zenon Konopka of Tampa Bay leads at 64.5 percent. Drew Stafford has won 11 of the 15 faceoffs he's taken this season. He did well last night in Philadelphia as Tim Connolly elected not to take draws. Connolly is only 41.7 percent. Ruff said, "Drew Stafford stepped in and had a surprising night on draws which is good. Clarke MacArthur, same thing." As far as Connolly electing not to take draws Ruff said, "Sometimes he feels a left hander is better (Connolly shoots right). He's not hurt, I just think that's his decision sometimes and I've told him, I'm OK with that. If you think you can put somebody in there that will win the draw, then he's got to assume your responsibility in the 'D' zone short term."

All this will put Andrej Sekera and Matt Ellis in the line up. Nathan Paetsch will play for Kaleta.

Ryan Miller will be in net.

Join Brian Koziol at 6:00 for the pregame when he'll be joined by Ruff, Tim Kennedy and Chris Butler.

Where have I seen this hit before?
Oh yeah, Ovechkin on Kaleta! Where is Ovechkins conference call? This league is no better than any other when it comes to giving unfair treatment to its stars. Shame on the NHL.
11/28/2009 4:52PM
Which was it?
Ross was injured by Kaleta's hit, while Kaleta was not by OV's; or OV's a star and Kaleta is not. Neither is a good reason for the difference in punishment.

Consistency, or lack thereof
Colin Campbell's a joke. The difference between the Ovechkin and Kaleta hits is that Kaleta's back was to Ovie the whole time when Alex the Great was taking four strides to deck him. Ross saw Kaleta coming and turned at the last minute. It's the hockey version of a soccer dive, with more serious results. Players do it all the time now to draw a penalty. And you can't say the league suspends based on result because Richards should have been suspended for his cheap shot Booth (who is still out). No wonder the NHL can't build fan base. Either idiot lawyers or ex players are running the show.

Joke
Perhaps worth a 2 min. Boarding but nothing more. The youngster saw Kaleta coming and deliberately turned his shoulder to put his back to Kaleta. While I think the league has to start taking some precautions against bad hits I think they also have to make sure players arent using the fear of a penalty to their advantage. If they dont get a grasp on it now theyll have everyone turning their back on checks and it will get out of control like diving did post lockout.

Campbell finally gets Kaleta
Pat Kaleta is a hockey rarity that goes against the Canadian mentality of physical play. Kaleta never sticks, punches or cheapshots players. What he does is check harder and 99% of the time cleanly, than most, particularly for his size. Old school N.H.L. neanderthals believe he should drop the gloves more given the physical punishment he can deliver within the rules. Why ? He'd be fighting every game. The biggest joke is Colin Campbell who now decides league codes of "ethics" on the ice was a scumbag hockey player in his day. The ever present "old boys club" resent Kaleta's style ever since he was busting up their kids in Canada in his junior days up in Peterborough.

CHEAP SHOT ARTIST!!!!
He's been a CHEAP SHOT ARTIST since he was put in the NHL by the Sabres. No other team would put this CHICKEN-GOON on the ice. ALWAYS hits from behind!!! He's a marked WOman because of it and HERS IS COMIN soon. Ruff should also be suspendedfor encouraging this CHEAP SHOT DUCK AND COVER CRAP! Should both have gotten 10 games!!! PATHETIC!!! SPRING'S COMIN!!!
11/28/2009 5:34PM
WTF
What about the hit to the head that myers received?? The flyers player speared him in the head and no fine or suspension? I agree that kaleta was going to make a clean hit before the guy turned his back on him after emery yelled at him that kaleta was coming. I wouldn't mind if kaleta was suspended as long as you call every "ovechkin" player fairly. Good one Colin no balls campbell.
11/28/2009 5:48PM
its
because he is not a big known player and its the sabres

The flyer fans should show how classy they are again and booo an injured player. Oh wait they already did. P.S. Philly still holds the record for cheap shots. Where is briere again? Oh yeah you could have used him when we beat your sorry pathetic team.
11/28/2009 6:12PM
A Border War ?
I think the Canadian reference about "Campbell Gets Kaleta" hit a nerve with our friends to the North.
11/28/2009 6:15PM
Ovie's hit Bothering You???
Maybe you should be more concerned with Ovie's SCORCHER!!... that "MR. ELITE" IS STILL LOOKING FOR!!!
11/28/2009 6:15PM
Truth is....
If Kaleta played for Toronto they'd love him. He was voted most popular player when he played up in Peterborough in Juniors.
11/28/2009 6:18PM
ICE CREAM franchise???
Speaking of MR SOFTEE... these two couldn't miss in this business; Cryin Ryan is a vanilla cone.. Punk Emery is the chocolate cone.

The NHL is a Joke, why do you think their ratings are worse then reruns of rosanne and Pro bowling
Ovechkin should have been suspended but he is a high profile player. players like kaleta isnt even making an example because know one cares about him. if the NHL wants to be taken serious they need to show no one is above the law. i am sure Crosby cancrack his stick across someones head and nothing would happen maybe a 2 min minor. they wonder why they cant get a real tv deal
11/28/2009 8:34PM
The new N.H.L...
Turn your back to a check at the last second, get you're opponent suspended. This league is 3rd rate in the minds of most spots fans in America. Thank You Gary Bettman and Colon Campbell.

Suspension chart
In case anyone hasn't seen it yet, here is the NHL's suspension flow chart http://www.downgoesbrown.com/2009/11/nhl-suspensions.html
11/29/2009 12:52AM
it's not the 1st time
anyone remember when ovechkin pushed briere a good 3 seconds after he dumped the puck in and was going off on a line change and briere went head first into the boards. nothing was done then so why would anything be done now. you know there's a double standard. everyone has to abide by the rules except for the crosby's and ovechkin's.
11/29/2009 2:10AM
Garbage
That flow chart is alarmingly accurate. It's almost to scary to be funny, especially the part about Pronger. Kaleta's his deserved a suspension. I will never argue that. Ovechkin's hit also deserved a suspension. It was just is bad, if not worse. So......where is Ovechkin's suspension? He's hit people from behind before. What, the NHL can't afford to have its best player sitting for 2 games? Absolute garbage. How can you maintain order if you can't maintain consistency between players?

GuyinOP
Can apparently make racist comments (Emery cone) and talk about rape in here. Classy board. Guy, you better hope I never figure out who you are.
