(WGR 550) -- The Sabres had an optional skate Tuesday, with Ryan Miller and Jason Pominville among the players choosing not to partake in on-ice training.
Lindy Ruff said optional days are going to have to happen with the brutal stretch of games to come, even if December's next five games are at HSBC Arena. Derek Roy, Henrik Tallinder, Toni Lydman, Tim Connolly and Thomas Vanek chose to stay off the ice, while veterans Mike Grier and Steve Montador were among those who did skate.
Ruff and Miller both dismissed questions about Miller being called the best goaltender in the world right now by some members of the Toronto media. Ruff said captain Craig Rivet was improving, but that he didn't expect the defenseman to play Thursday against Montreal. Paul Gaustad remarked that he felt better while walking down the tunnel without any noticeable limp.
The players on the ice used two unique obstacles for practice. The defensemen worked on point shots through an elaborate cut-out designed to simulate a players legs, constructed out of old dasher board material and wood. The forwards cycled and passed through and around the face-off circles with 2x4's blocked their passes, forcing them to saucer the puck.
Odd note: the Sabres have blocked the fewest amount of shots in the NHL.
