Immediate Reactions, Wk14

nick@wgr550.com

It was a very active day in the extra-immediate reactions world known as my Twitter page. Head there for in-game posts.

The Bills may be bad, but they aren't Chiefs bad. Yeesh. Kansas City deserves a better pick than Buffalo.

And "Operation 7-9" commences...

-- I know this is a single game article, but I think a lot of folks would be open to talking about with Perry Fewell as head coach if they knew, absolutely and certainly, that the rest of the front office was overthrown.

-- The Bills are now tied with the Packers for the most interceptions in the National Football League. Who would've thought rookie safety Jairus Byrd would be leading the league in interceptions and former wide receiver George Wilson would have collected four interceptions while leading the team in tackles? Seriously, this is Buffalo football now. I'm not even complaining, but Bryan Scott and Wilson were 450th-string safeties, and now they are making pivotal plays. Coach 'em up, Per.

-- After those nice words about Wilson, the Bills definitely could've been whistled for a brutally-obvious pass interference call on the last play of the game.

-- I've got some interest in discussing Paul Posluszny as a football player. He's not the fastest dude on Earth, and he's been hurt several times, but is there a chance he's been the victim of a garbage set of linebackers? He's put up 83 tackles, a sack and two interceptions, and maybe if he was working with a ballhawk like Brian Cushing or Clay Matthews, Jr., Bills fans would feel a lot better about Pos.

-- I'm still having trouble believing Alex "Madden Playcalling" Van Pelt showed as much allegiance to the run as he should've for once, and I wonder what he would do with an actual line and quarterback. I still want Bill Cowher in here -- yeah, right -- or someone of his ilk, but if the ownership goes status quo, who knows?

-- The 2009 Buffalo Bills have reinforced what should be a universal truth: players can win without coaches, but coaches can't win without players. Perry Fewell didn't make any decisions I truly questions in Buffalo's 16-10 win in Kansas City, and the team still didn't win. Now, would Dick Jauron have made a decision to change the flow of this game? Sure. He probably would've let Bobby April fake that final Chiefs punt with just over a minute to play. Fewell's 2-2, and I believe this team would've been 7-9 with him at the helm, not that that means anything for next year. The question to ask yourself: If the Fewell-led Bills beat the Pats and either the Falcons or Colts, wouldn't you consider him at least as good an option as some other also-ran in the league?

-- Nice, big day for Marshawn Lynch and Freddy Jackson. Lynch would've had a 100-yard day in the easiest of ways if he would've just headed back to the "run people over" approach instead of trying to be an actual running back. There's something to be said for the idea of "Beast Mode," that Lynch has to play like a bull rather than do the Ickey Shuffle behind the line of scrimmage. Jackson, of course, had his standard super-steady-but-unspectacular game.

-- I've said it all year, and it may be the only true universal truth I have in stone about these Bills. They are two NFL-caliber linebackers away from being a very good defense. As much as folks talk about nose tackles being a big part of a run defense, it's usually the Brian Urlachers, A.J. Hawks and Ray Lewises that make things happen in the "gaps."

-- I want to know how Eric Wood is doing, because it'll do a lot to shape where I think the Bills need to go in the offseason. I know Fewell said he doesn't believe the leg injury to be career-threating.

-- Ryan Fitzpatrick... yeesh. I want to see Brian Brohm right now. Let's find out if there's a glimmer in ol' Bromulus and Remus. Let's see if he can be the Atomic Brohm. I'd love to know if he's a star like Brohminik Hasek. I need to know if the Bills web site should be BuffaloBIlls-dot-Brohm. Or perhaps he'll be another Bills quarterback conundrum, much like VietBrohm. Please Bills, give my awful sense of humor three weeks here.

-- By the way, Bills fans could think about welcoming Owens back next year, but I bet he sees Brandon Marshall break his record with Kyle Orton as quarterback and thinks, "What the &*^&!"

-- I kinda feel bad for Matt Cassel until I remember he's rich. With Dwayne Bowe suspended, he has almost nothing going for him.

-- Aaron Schobel is up to eight sacks, and Chris Kelsay's up to five. With a healthy Stroud and Williams, these guys are getting a bum rap from their linebackers.

-- There must be something in the water, because we can welcome Fitzpatrick to the "Hey, Lee Evans is on the team" club.

Stat line I enjoyed:
Bryan Scott, nine tackles, one sack
-- For a safety playing linebacker severely underweight, his performance has been admirable.

Stat line I didn't enjoy:
Ryan Fitzpatrick, 12-of-20, 86 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
-- That interception was one of the worst in recent history, and think about what that means.

Game ball:
The offensive line
-- This much-maligned unit only allowed two sacks, and pushed the Chiefs around for 5.7 yards-per-carry on 35 attempts. Seriously, give those hogs a hand (but then wash it. Swine flu and whatnot).

Lastly...
I've said enough. Seriously. Who even watched this one?

Next Week:
You should stop reading my predictions. I had the Chiefs winning, 20-10. In my defense, I didn't know they were clearly worse than the Bills. Honestly, would you put it past the Bills to unload on the Pats? I bet you would. New England 27, Buffalo 16.

What???
Where is the Trent Edwards bashing?
12/13/2009 5:30PM
Evans
Maybe the fact Evans disappears isn't because of the QBs
12/13/2009 5:43PM
C'mon...
Let's not get to excited, they beat the chiefs in an ugly boring game to basically see who is worse, not better. It was classic jauron-ball, don't take any chances and pray the other team kills itself. It only worked here, because, well, the opponent was the chiefs. If we keep perry as head coach with the same bs excuse of continuity, get ready for some more 7 and 9 action, boring games, many of which end in heartbreaking fashion (as this one would have if not for a dropped pass...), and offensive gameplay that is offensive in entirely the wrong way. I don't care what wilson has to do, he better bring in a coach with some serious credibility and track record this time, I'm done with projects and maybe's.The bills should be using the rest of the season to find a QB. Watching fitz perform, even if brohm is horrible, how much of a drop-off could you have from today's qb performance? And clearly, fitzpatrick is not the answer at qb. That is clear right? Oh boy...
12/13/2009 5:46PM
There's still hope, just not that much
The bills at 5-8 can still make the playoffs reasonable. The AFC is in shambles right now. If they win out then they'll be 8-8. One 8-8 will make the playoffs this year, either as a wild card or the only other way as victor or the AFC east. This is a huge if, but IF they beat the Pats then they will show they can compete with anyone, They already competed against the pats but lost. And instead of tricky dick telling the players how great it will be to get paid for being in the NFL Perry will let them know they have an oportunity for greatness, but they gotta take it while they have it. 31-28 bills over Pats this sunday.
12/13/2009 5:47PM
WOW what a nail biter
I guess we can forget about Bradford and Locker
12/13/2009 6:14PM
In all honest...
I truly didn't care that the Bills were playing today. Especially in that they continue to start Fitzpatrick. Put Brohm in there for the last 3 games. Otherwise, I have zero interest in this team. And no matter how they finish, Fewell has to go. Not because of the coach he may be, but because of the regime he came from.
12/13/2009 6:34PM
How bout them sabres?
Now that Lindy has decided to play the trap to protect our leads, we are winning close one's. Why watch the Bills defeat the lowly chiefs when you can watch the Sabres shutout (3-0) the most exciting hockey player since Gretsky?
12/13/2009 6:40PM
Hey WGR
Do us all a favor and stop following the Bills! Your horrible at it!
12/13/2009 7:58PM
Maybe or Maybin not?
I want Maybin on the field every down. This kid needs to play. Earn your paycheck and learn what the hell is going on out there. By the way Orakpo, the guy that we passed on for the undersized good charachter guy who has a great motor, has 11.5 sacks. Not bad for a rookie defensive end. Don't they have a hard time adjusting to the pro game. Maybe not! Maybe Modrak has trouble adjusting to the pro game.
12/13/2009 8:10PM
I don't care
as long as we beat the patriots next week, and lose against the falcons and colts, i'll be happy as heck! I want a victory over the patriots so bad
12/13/2009 8:16PM
Here we go again
Another 7-9 season, another wasted mid round draft pick, another season wallowing in mediocrity....yawn.
12/13/2009 8:56PM
uh Nick names
Can GR or fans stop giving nicknames? I know it's a joke, but it does illustrate the desperation this team and their fans are in when nicknames are given to people no one here has even seen play. Fitzpatrick "The Irish Assasin?" comes to mind. And all the Edwards nicknames (which actually only took focus away from the Bills bigger problems) After a game the nickname says more about the person who gives it then about the person who it is given to. That being said, I do have a nickname suggestion for the entire Bills organization how about we start calling them The Los Angeles Bills! Hahahahahahahahahahahaha
12/13/2009 8:58PM
re how bout them Sabres
agreed. Nice work changing the topic from this dog and pony show to something that actually matters.

Weird . . .
How many people who hate the Bills and hope they leave come on here to tell us how much they don't care. You can't honestly have that little to do with your time.
12/13/2009 9:24PM
Maybe they need
like a garage band name... the Ralph Wilson Project, or Huey Lewis and the guys who don't play football very well. or, or... Suck Suck has another sold out show tonight at the Ralph, get ready to feel the angst! And buy a t-shirt.
12/13/2009 9:26PM
re Weird
Well, to be honest I was hoping we could just talk about the Sabres, since you know they have a chance at the playoffs this year. But feel free to care about the Bills if you want. No one's stopping you.
12/13/2009 9:35PM
If you're still a Bill's fan
that's fine. I get it (I don't care if they win or lose actually), but you know they will probably go 7-9 or heck maybe even 8-8 at best which most likely won't get them into the playoffs, so this season is more or less over. If Fewell keeps the job, good for him and I wish him luck. But this team should have been sold years ago. That's the point. And why should Buffalo Mortgage its future to preserve this team? Seriously, why? If someone can anwer that feel free.
12/13/2009 9:37PM
Yeah
I take back the nickname Suck, I think a band already has it, so I don't want to have any copyright issues come up. Besides they don't really "Suck." I just couldn't bring myself to call them GOOD.
12/13/2009 9:44PM
I'm partial to
The Syracuse Food and Beverage Collective.
12/13/2009 9:47PM
backless
if the nebraska defensive lineman is available we could not pass on him. But if he is not there we would have to take Rolando McClain from Alabama. I know the Defense has had some good games, you will not win if you can't stop the run. I do believethey need to find out if Brohm can play, but I do not think there is QB worth taking in the first round. One guy that is having great year is Moorman!I think there will be offensive lineman available in free agency.
12/13/2009 9:49PM
let me count the ways
to get to 7-9
12/13/2009 9:52PM
Buffalo just say no
to bad relationships. You deserve something better.
12/13/2009 9:53PM
ps
stop going to the games.
12/13/2009 11:05PM
gameday
The Bills played today?
12/13/2009 11:24PM
Bad teams are well...bad
What kind of messed up logic do some fans have when they say oh we are only a few players away our secondary is great and if we only had a few kucky breaks...look bad teams find ways to lose games to better teams. With the exception of cleveland every single team that has beat them is better. My message to some Bills fans is cut the crap and lets hope for 5-11 here. Like Sully said in his columns this morning a very high draft pick wpuld serve this team well. Stop drafting marginal starters like Donte Witner and Paul Posluzny who on most other teams in this league would not even be starters and start getting real nfl players and building a bonafide contender instead of a mediocre to bad piece of nauseating crap.

To all,the people who are giving the bills other names and hoping they move just get off of WGR550 website honestly your probably not even from Buffalo and if you are your probably some lame overweight middle age loser sitting at his computer in his/her mom's basement. You probably dont even know what a football looks like let alone how to play the game!

ReVenge Match Pats Vs Bills Next Week!
Who knows what wouldve happened had the Bills won that Mondaynight that first game. Payback time. Kill the Pats Season -Next Week.
12/14/2009 12:52AM
afc east all 8-8, who wins division?
what if.. pats 8-8 Fins 8-8 jets 8-8 jills 8-8?could we get into playoffs???
12/14/2009 6:26AM
Maybin Not! But he's hardy not Deshawn Jackson!
The names keep coming to mind. Those players who the Bills pass on. We have a marginal director of college scouting and it shows. Whitner and Poz definitely but look even closer. Maybe Philly will trade Deshawn Jackson for James Hardy? Just a thought. Maybe Washington will trade Fred Davis for Derek Fine? Just a thought. Maybe the Bills could get Ngata from the ravens. That guy they said was too sloww and passed on for J.P Losman I believe? Yeah he's too slow. HE EATS PEOPLE! I WANT PEOPLE ON THIS TEAM THAT ARE MEAN AND WILL EAT PEOPLE!
12/14/2009 1:43PM
Posluszny
I wish more people would realize what you said about him Nick. He's a Penn State LB, they will go about making their plays without being flashy, but they will make their plays. Shane Conlin never made the big flashy plays, he left that up to Bennett and Talley, but he made the plays when he had to, quietly, behind the scenes, but big plays none the less. Get Posluszny some help out there, that includes Hair and Ellison.
12/14/2009 10:44PM
Linebacker help wanted
Would Mcnabb be available for a couple years, because what this team needs to address is there line backer position. Draft Rolando McClain out of Alabama to play the middle then put Poz and Maybin on the outside where they belong. As for the offensive line goes they only need to stay healthy and might be ok.The weakest link on offense is the QB does not make plays. Get a good QB in here and that will make the line look better. There is no QB coming out in the draft can come right in and start in his firse yesr. I think by taking one in the first round will bite them in the ass. You build a team to be tough first. That starts with fast and nasty linebackers who hit and hit somemore.
