Bills Name George Edwards Defensive Coordinator

The Bills have hired George Edwards as their Defensive Coordinator. Edwards was the linebackers coach in Dallas when Bills' coach Chan Gailey coached there.

When asked what kind of defense he plans to run in Buffalo, Edwards said, “Defensively, we will start from a 3-4 alignment, but we will do what we feel is best for our players to do.  We are not going to give anything away about exactly what we will do, but personnel will dictate what you can and what you can’t do.  As far as the initial alignment, the 3-4 is what we will start off with and we will adjust from there.”

He had just been hired on January 7th to become the Florida Gators' defensive coordinator, but will leave there to take this job in Buffalo.

Edwards has coached in the NFL for 12 years, including the last 5 seasons as the Dolphins linebacker coach.

Looks like 3-4
So it looks like we will def be transitioning to the 3-4 which will make this rebuilding project even longer unless they plan to be very active in FA
02/04/2010 2:06PM
WHO???
All i ask is just please turn this damn team around!!! we want a winning season.
02/04/2010 2:06PM
great.....
when we thought it couldnt snowball anymore...
02/04/2010 2:08PM
Really?
Who cares anymore? This team is an ABSOLUTE JOKE.
02/04/2010 2:14PM
Wow....
go get your season tix now...... NOT!
02/04/2010 2:14PM
NFLS...
...first all pro college team. What the hell is going on with these grabs. Makes the season look even more hopeless.
02/04/2010 2:23PM
Hahahahaha
Is anyone really shocked by this? There was no need to hire a proven DC when the rest of the staff is unproven or no names. By the law of averages the Bills will eventually get lucky and find that diamond in the ruff coach that nobody has ever known. The plan has worked for the last ten years so why should Ralph stop now. Let's start planning for the 2011 draft as well.
02/04/2010 2:24PM
wow
need i say more wow what a great hire - lol
02/04/2010 2:25PM
Not bad
The linebackers for the Dolphins were always pretty good right and getting a job with the Gators is a pretty good job right ad the 3-4 might work i might like this hire!
02/04/2010 2:27PM
God!!!!
What is wrong with these loosers??
02/04/2010 2:46PM
Does It Matter?
We didnt have talented linebackers in a 4-3 set, and now we need to field more linebackers? And where arewe getting these players from? I'm with everyone else - at this point it doesnt matter.
02/04/2010 2:47PM
Typical Buffalo Fans
Typical Buffalo fans. I really don't know what you guys expected here. We hired Chan Gailey as our HC, maybe Cowher was gonna come and be D-Coordinator under him? Great move by the Bills getting a 3-4 guy, not to mention a guy that just got hired by the Gators. I don't care what you say college or not the guy obviously had what it took to fill the position at Florida. I really don't know what you guys expected.
02/04/2010 2:48PM
Get your Popcorn "guy" Ready!
LB coach for the fish = Defensive Coor.. I just heard the top popcorn attendant employed candlestick = new Def line coach- these guys are a JOKE, J-O-K-E, JOKE, JOKE, JOKE!!!!
02/04/2010 2:48PM
What do you expect
You guys sound like Hall of Fame Assistant Coaches are sitting around waiting for jobs....Get real! To be good, everything has to fall into place. The last few years, nothing has fallen right for us.....it will change....just hope it does before I die!
02/04/2010 2:59PM
Number one overal here we come!
Looks like we will be picking first next year! Something to look forward to
02/04/2010 3:06PM
Hopefully
this leads to drafting Rolando McClain
02/04/2010 3:06PM
Opens the door
For Joey Porter. He wants out of Miami, to start full time, and be effective. Him and Schobel on the outside would be awesome. If he and this coach got along, I don't see why we shouldn't get him.
02/04/2010 3:12PM
if u think this is a good hire your stupid!
the players they have on this roster are terrible..we need to now trade stroud and williams and get a real nt..along with a new d end if schobel retires..its a mess and its getting worse everyday! gailey was the first joke and his coaching staff gets to be a bigger joke everyday! we need ralph to die to ever have a chance of being good!
02/04/2010 3:16PM
Too much negativity
The 4-3 Defense was getting stale, Florida thought enough of this guy to hire him so whats the problem? looking forward to seeing what Poz, and Maybin can do in a 3-4!
02/04/2010 3:18PM
The sky is falling! The sky is falling!
How many other team's coaches do you expect to know by name? It'll be a tough transition, but not as hard as most people here think. Kyle Williams & Spencer Johnson can be 3-4 DEs. Kelsay & Maybin may be convertable to OLBs. Ellis & Denney can be given the same opportunity as well. (I'll assume Schobel retires). Move Poz & Mitchell inside. Will it take time to get reps in & require additonal free agents & draft picks? Yes, but it's far from the unmitigated disaster many claim it is. Hopefully the talent in the secondary will actually be allowed to play more man-to-man. In the meantime everyone needs to stop imitating Jerry Sullivan.
02/04/2010 3:20PM
Who says "Not" anymore?
I don't expect much from fans on this website, but WGR should make it a rule that your IP gets banned when you use the word "Not" after a statement.
02/04/2010 3:33PM
Price is right
Another low paid unaccomplished coordinator getting to fit into an elevated job. The Bills have long established the same pattern of hire and even more importantly a clear and dintinct path of failures. There is no positive spin to this move.
02/04/2010 3:40PM
You all do not know
what you are talking about. Let the football people make the football decisions. You all should stick to complaining on the whiner line!
02/04/2010 4:06PM
I'm all for the 3-4 but
this crop of coaches is an absolute joke. I guess at this point we should all be happy that they haven't hired any high school coaches. Shame on me for thinking that Ralph was finally going to try to build a winner when he fired everyone. I'm a Bills fan through and through, but I'm just about done with the whole "This year will be different" line of BS.
02/04/2010 4:10PM
21 on IR
What team was all the naysayers watching, injuries devastated this team, their record could have been much better, even without a good QB. I say give this ataff a chance, bring in some free agents, have a good draft, and if you hate this team so much, gowatch U.B., OR SIGN UP FOR A NEW TEAM!
02/04/2010 4:36PM
Hello
Alright people take a break. In Buffalo, NO ONE CAN TRY ANYTHING NEW--Grow up. Most of these fans couldn't coach a Pop warner league and they will complaine about any and everything. Big Surprize--998 Broadway is gone and it's time to move on. Who do you want them to bring in Marv and Lou?
02/04/2010 4:36PM
hold on a second
i was similar posts during the sabres offseason. everyone was complaining about the lack of moves and look at them now. lets give em a chance
02/04/2010 4:40PM
even better
why would ralph do something as stupid as signing a big name pro bowl super bowl champion linebacker like joey porter? I think we're better off if we go lure eddie robinson out of retirement for the league minimum. go bills!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!
02/04/2010 4:40PM
"Where do I sign?!"
So many of the whiners and complainers make it sound like Buddy Nix should be able to be the Pied Piper of the NFL, and get anyone he wants (or in this case, you want) to fall under his spell and come to Buffalo with glassy eyes and a pen in hand ready to sign and begin resurrecting the franchise. It's not that easy. So, to all of you prime candidates for anger management therapy, "lighten up Francis"! Though most names are not well-known, they appear to look pretty good so far, all things considered. Get a hobby or enter therapy or counseling if it bothers you so much. Go Bills!
02/04/2010 5:08PM
can play 3-4

02/04/2010 5:27PM
Check facts before you complain
1 - Edwards has been a DC in the past (Washington) so this isn't someone who has never coached above the position level 2 - there are fewer holes than most think. Our 4-3 tackles are the same size as 3-4 ends and since our previous system emphasized speed over space they are mobile enough to play end 3 - our current DEs are similarly suited to play OLB in a 3-4. (though this transition is definitely more difficult) It will be a hybrid 3-4 (just like the system during the glory days). No one plays exclusively 3-4 or 4-3. This formation will only increase the flexibility of the competent half of the team. Stop whining! (And learn how to spell...)
02/04/2010 5:52PM
coaches
All superbowl winning coaches had to start somewhere. Just look at the bio's on all of the superbowl coaches i.e. how they got their start and who heard of them before their rise to stardom. It takes forever to get the kind of stardom that these guys get. Yes Bill in NE was young when he won ..but check out where he came from...how did he do in cleveland? It takes time and you need an SOB like Nix to git r done...take a breath and watch some curling.
02/04/2010 5:54PM
We wanted Jauron & co. gone ...
But who's on first? We won't need a program to check players on the roster, but rather the coaches on the sidelines. That's what we wanted/needed. I just hope they're not as stubborn with the 3-4 as they were with the no-huddle last year. If it works great; but don't bring a "bust" into the season. Should be interesting. BTW tell me who the Head Coach is again, I forgot already.
02/04/2010 7:26PM
hey "hold on a second"
you're dumb
02/04/2010 7:59PM
3-4
Finally we are making the switch to a 3-4. I would prefer a complete overhaul of the front 7. They barely get pressure on the qb and can't stop the run. Get me 7 new guys and release the rest. Play maybin where he belongs...the bench.
02/04/2010 9:19PM
top pick
first pick Rolando Mcclain Alabama bring it on
02/04/2010 9:53PM
CRICKETS ALREADY CHIRPING!
I can hear them in that soon to be EMPTY HOLE of a stadium. SUNDAYS WILL NEVER BE THE SAME! At least i'll save some money! Now onto 7 AND 9 Ralph! CHAN FRIGGIN GAILEY, ARGHHHHHHHHH!!!!
02/04/2010 10:01PM
stop complaining
Look he has spent the last 5 seasons in Miami as the LB's coach. Parcells liked him otherwise he would not have kept him on the staff. They need to go 3-4 and I think this could potentially turn out to be a great hire.
02/05/2010 8:56AM
Making a run
I think its a great pick. they are really gearing up for a run at a BCS bowl. Maybe even the national championship.
02/05/2010 9:43AM
who knows
the bills could be crap again like the last ten years or they might have a winning season. nothing has changed in ten years , maybe for once this could gel together and be a winning season, I am one who prsonally does not think so , I will say it will take another few years for this team to turn around.
