Bills Will Let Owens, Reed, Denney Walk

Personnel decisions are made left and right at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, and with free agency starting in less than a week, the Buffalo Bills made a very big statement today.

The Bills have informed wide receivers Terrell Owens, Josh Reed and defensive end Ryan Denney that they will not be offered a contract to stay with the franchise. That makes all three free agents on March 5th, the start of the NFL calendar year.

According to the team's press release, General Manager Buddy Nix made this statement on the matter: "We wanted to inform all three players ahead of the start of the free agency period so they could begin making their plans. We just felt that was the right thing to do. All three have represented our organization with class and we thank them for their dedication and hard work."

Owens only spent one year with Buffalo after being cut by Dallas last off-season. In that one season, Owens accumulated 55 catches for 829 yards and five touchdowns.

Reed and Denney were among the longest tenured players on Buffalo's roster this past year. Both were drafted in 2002 and lasted through multiple regimes.

Reed ranks fifth in team history in receptions with 311, and is tenth in team history in receiving yards with 3,575.  Denney never cracked the starting lineup consistently for the Bills, serving as a key backup and racking up 318 total tackles and 23.5 sacks during his eight years in Buffalo.

The trio will officially become unrestricted free agents on March 5.

About Time
Josh Reed was Edwards favorite target. Good riddance to Owens!

TO needs to GO
a publicity stunt gone awry, signing ownes drained the bills of money they could have used on the offensive line. we were just a stepping stone for him, but we let him use us anyways in the hope that some divine miracle would happen. well, there was nomiracle, as we once again went 7-9. sign Jimmy from Norte Dame, build up the line, and lets tear up the league.
02/27/2010 9:39PM
boo hoo
get rid of em all except McKelvin, Evans, and Jackson. field a hihgschool team for all i care. forget this team, nothing they do interests me anymore. gonna be an empty stadium this year and thats what they deserve!
02/27/2010 10:09PM
Great
Who the heck is Moorman going to throw TDs to now?

Re: TO needs to GO
Ya that publicity stunt really went wrong for them, his jersey was a top seller in the league and he didnt even come close to the stunts he pulled in other cities...it was a good signing and fill in for the bills...the guy had 855 yards with no QB imagine what he would of had if we had a decent QB....the bills obviously had no interest in signing lineman they were going to draft them...we didnt go 7-9 and we cant sign jimmy has to be drafted
02/27/2010 10:42PM
Now what?
If we had a decent QB, Owens would have put up a lot more better numbers. We could probably just release about half the team and it wouldn't make a difference. Half of our "starters" probably wouldn't even be on a team elsewhere. With free agency starting next week, we probably won't do much there either. Maybe if the fans smartened up and just watched the games at home, maybe the front office would actually try and make this team better rather then the same crap for the last 10 seasons.
02/27/2010 10:51PM
Most Reed's moved all year...
Considering that we rarely sent out slot WR in motion...Reeds gotta be happy about being released. Bruise you kidney for your team and get pushed to the bench because your QB can fit a tight throw in over the middle.
02/27/2010 11:18PM
Josh Reed
Does anyone know why they are letting Reed go? I thought he was a good possession WR with good hands. I am not a Bills fan, but I just think Reed is a decent slot WR.
02/27/2010 11:36PM
What about Parrish
Why stop at Reed, get rid of Parrish too!!! Hardy and Stevie Johnson can pick up the load
02/28/2010 12:13AM
Reed solid
Sorry to see Reed go. He was a solid clutch receiver and one of the better run blockers on the team. We probably should have kept him to see if our tallest receiver can actually catch.
02/28/2010 12:31AM
GET RID OF KAWIKA B**CHALL
brutal LB. need him out of here as well. he cant tackle freaking recievers, hes a bum, waste of money.
02/28/2010 3:29AM
well
Congratulations to all three of them! Especially Josh Reed, look for him catching balls over the middle at least twice a season for the Jets or the Pats.

T.O. out the door
Owens still has great wheels but thats not the problem. The OL and the QB position were manned by rookies, practice squad players, or just plain lousy(See Edwards:Trent) players. As for all of these Fighting Irish idiots that want Jimmy Clausen, why draft a guy with a marginal arm, questionable leadership skills, and a losing career record (16 wins-18 losses)as a starter from a school who played well below its talent level ? Thats all we need is another Notre Dame failures. Lookup Walt Patulski, Tony Hunter, Greg Bell, and the failed QB's drafted out of Notre Dame like Rick Mirer, Blair Kiel,Steve Beurlein,Kent Graham,Jarious Jackson,Ron Powlus, and Brady Quinn. The only great QB from ND was Joe Montana. Theismann was a complete tool who won a SB on a strong Redskins team. Count me out on Irish QB's.
02/28/2010 8:00AM
Surprise!
Buddy went this far... so now might as well cut everybody... with the exception of Maybin, whom I'm sure he's building a contender around. I just don't get what they're thinking. Then again... who does?
02/28/2010 9:30AM
to: boo hoo
you obviously cared enuf to write that dribble. The Stadium will be filled no matter who is wearing the Red White & Blue. They tried to fire Reed last yr, but he dropped the pink slip.
02/28/2010 11:47AM
wrong move
TO would have been alot better if the QB had time to throw or some kind of an offensive game plan. they need to start from the o-line not people that know the game of football. Remember that football games are won in the trenches. I live in Florida now but by god there has to be a way management can hear us (the fans).
02/28/2010 12:53PM
Owens gone?
he was our 3rd most explosive offensive player behind Fred Jackson 1st and Lee Evans 2nd (IMO). Wow a hall of famer is being let go before these other scrubs?... Im starting to feel HOW CORRUPT this organization has got. ITS GETTING WORSE WITH THESE NEW COACHES.
02/28/2010 1:19PM
JOSH REED HAS FANS???...
INCREDIBLE! CLASSIC ALLIGATOR ARMS!!!
02/28/2010 3:08PM
Clean House - a beginning
T.O., Reed, and Denney--just the tip of the iceberg. Let's follow with Lynch, Parrish, Ellison, Yobuty, Chambers, and Witner. While I was skeptical at the beginning, I think the new regime is heading in the right directin. Making roster changes now indicate they are serious about redefining "Bills' Football" and building a competitive team that is once again the pride of Western New York.

Re: T.O. out the door
Are you kidding? Apperently every other quarterback must be a "great quarterback," because I'm pretty sure Rick Mirer, Blair Kiel, Steve Beurleir, Kent Graham, and Joe Theisman would be huge improvements over what we have. If you would actually check scouting reports or watch Irish games you would see that Jimmy's arm is much better than mediocre, he routinely makes throws that Edwards and Fitzpatrick could only make in their dreams, and the fact that Jimmy was able to put up phenominal numbers despite a porous defense shows how good he is. But its a mopot point, unless if Buddy and Ralph pony up the picks and move up, either the Rams, Redskins, or Seahawks are going to get a franchise QB in Clausen
02/28/2010 8:25PM
bring back Denney
It would be a mistake to let go og Denney. He was our best pass rusher and you saw team key on him evert time he was out there. The reason he never played was cause Kelsay and Shobel were high picks. Denney wwill come back to haunt the Bills. He willbe the 20100 defensive player of the year without a douibt.
02/28/2010 8:55PM
titles are stupid.
the person above me is insane. I would have liked to keep Denney as well, but it's mostly because he's got the big frame I'm looking for in a 3-4 end.

Let the Rebuilding Begin
Lets hope Nix continues to get rid of the dead weight.

Uniforms
Does anyone know why the red stripe on the side of the Bills away jersey goes all the way to the top on some jerseys, but not on others? It's the only interesting thing about this team.
03/01/2010 2:22PM
Kelsay/Denney
Chris Kelsay, Denney and Schoebel were all 2nd round picks...
03/01/2010 5:57PM
81
Do the ills retire #81 now?
03/01/2010 8:08PM
Ugh
Let's rebuild so we can rebuild again, pathetic. Anyone who watches those games next season is a nut bag.
03/01/2010 10:04PM
RE: Let the Rebuilding Begin
Are you freaking serious?....our receivers aren't the problem. It's the owner and his staff. I have watched so called bum players leave the Bills, go elsewhere and do great. The DEAD WEIGHT is the owner and the rest of these morons running the team. They chose to go cheap on the QB, the Head Coach and the O-line and keep getting the same results. Put Tom Brady on this team and he would be an epic failure. This organization if an f#$*ing JOKE!!...I have 10 yrs of failure to back it up.
03/02/2010 10:45AM
Edwards, Fitzpatrick, Brohm shouldve been first
I cant believe these coaches would let Owens go. He was the only reason why i watched the last few games of the season. Owens was the only one getting upset and actually getting the team fired up, the rest of the Deadbeats just sat there.
03/02/2010 7:29PM
T.O. leave the Key
hey TO..leave the freakin' City key that you tarnished as the door slams your arse..that would be the best down and out of all time!
