Sabres GM Darcy Regier joined Mike Schopp and the Bulldog on Friday afternoon to recap the trade deadline and talk about the Sabres recent struggles. Regier said that there were several instances of teams trying to deal potential unrestricted free agent players at the deadline -- but instead of trying to work out a deal within the salary cap -- the teams decided to keep the players they had and deal with unrestricted free agency after the season.
Regier acknowledged that the Sabres haven't played well over the last ten games -- but said that he's looking at the bigger picture -- the Sabres are 5th in the Eastern Conference and 2nd in the Northeast Division. Regier said there are challenges with keeping a coach as long as the Sabres have kept Lindy Ruff -- but the organization is committed to their plan from ownership down to the coaching staff.
Regier didn't specifically address the acquisition of Raffi Torres from Columbus -- but was asked about how shorthanded the Sabres were for Wednesday's game against the Capitals. Defenseman Steve Montador had to play forward on the fourth line. Regier said they had the option of calling a forward up from Portland, but decided against it because the Torres deal was completed so late and because Montador has played forward before.
