Kaleta's OT Winner Lifts Sabres Past Rangers 2-1

New York -- Patrick Kaleta probably wouldn't mind if the Sabres played at Madison Square Garden more than twice per season. The Buffalo native notched his third goal in two games at MSG, this one in overtime, to give the Sabres a 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Sunday. The win is Buffalo's second straight and puts them back in sole possession of first place in the Northeast Division.

The Sabres and Rangers battled through nearly 55 minutes of scoreless hockey -- with some impressive saves by Miller and Henrik Lundqvist along the way -- buf it was Buffalo that finally broke through first. Adam Mair swept a Derek Roy pass behind Lundqvist and into the New York net to put the Sabres up 1-0 at the 14:03 mark of the final period. Roy flipped the puck in front of the crease and both Thomas Vanek and Mair pounced on it, with the latter getting credit for the goal. A slashing call against Jochen Hecht with a just a little over two minutes to play, however, gave the Rangers a late-game power play -- one that they cashed in on when Brandon Dubinsky poked a rebound past Miller, making it a 1-1 game with only 1:23 to play. It was the Rangers' first goal in 149 minutes and 30 seconds, following a shutout against Washington on Saturday.

Buffalo came out firing in the extra frame to no avail, getting a couple of quick chances as well as a missed opportunity for Roy. The Sabres forward found himself all alone in the front of the Rangers' net, yet failed to capitalize. Kaleta, however, played the role of hero on Sunday and ended the game 2:22 into overtime by banking a shot off Lundqvist and into the net.

The victory snapped an eight-game road losing streak for the Sabres, their first win away from home since January 18th, and also puts the team back on top of the Northeast Division with a two-point lead over the idle Senators. Buffalo returns to HSBC Arena on Wednesday to face the Dallas Stars. Hear the play by play with Rick Jeanneret and Harry Neale on the Buffalo Sabres Radio Network at 7:00 p.m.

rangers win this game if kotalik is still a ranger
no question in my mind. it's amazing how people rip him when all he does is provide secondary scoring and get shootout winners. but he's saddled with bad coaching. first ruff then torts and then they give up on him. what a joke. but kotalik will have the last laugh.

Re:rangers win this game if kotalik is still a ranger
Kotalik has 2 goals, 1 assist, a minus 3 in nine games with Calgary. Please tell me your joking on this? I certainly hope so. The only recent success he has had, if you can call it he had 11 points in 19 games with Edmonton after acquiring him from the Sabres last year. Edmonton loved him so much they didn't even make any kind of effort to re-sign him. Yes, solid power play and shootout guy, but a huge liability 5 on 5 and takes too many nights off. Definitely not worth $3 million/season. Again, I hope your kidding on this which I'm sure you are.

Glad Sabres won! However, mishandling of puck, absolute refusal to clear puck out of own zone ,blind passes, poor passing etc... shakey, very shakey!

Re: Grinders
Gotta love it? Sure, nice win. I'm def happy...and my hometown boy kaleta buried it in the big apple. But we need our "Top 6" to light the lamp a little here. It's getting kind of ridiculous how inept they are at times...

Off Topic.... but
Steve Montador and Craig Rivet need to be benched. These guys have not been noticeable the last 3 months.

re: re: zop
people like YOU drive me nuts. because people dont accept everything as perfect thats a bad thing? they didnt play well the last two games but got a couple wins and like he says thats a good thing. The mistakes that they made are ones that they have made all season long and made while they have been losing for the last two months, give me a break, your mentality of accepting evreything has amazing is why lindy ruff and darcy regier have jobs after so many years of failure.

Re:Re:Rangers got screwed
yeah but but you don't have a big screen like me. you probably only have your mere 19" tv, probably without a remote. you better start collecting those soda cans.

RE: Off Topic.... but
That's kinda funny because Rivet's had probably 2 of his best games (especially Friday's game against Philly) with Butler on the bench. (0g 1a 1 and 0 giveaways combined)
