Ruff sees team "turn the corner"

(WGR 550) -- Coming off two much-needed victories that happened to need overtime, Lindy Ruff sees his Buffalo Sabres team putting good things together.

"Every game is tight," Ruff said during his weekly 8 a.m. Tuesday appearance on The Howard Simon Show. "It was good to see us battle hard in both those contests. I thought our club turned the corner."

Crediting "much-improved play" in the defensive zone and some good work in the offensive zone, Ruff reiterated the need to score more often by way of better scoring chances.

"I think it comes down to the number of pucks the other team's goaltender can see without being screened and how hard we work to get to the paint," Ruff said.

The head coach was asked about newcomer Raffi Torres' first two games as a Sabre.

"I thought he had a real nervous outing his first outing," Ruff said. "The game in New York, he was a physical presence and skated real well. It was a better night for him. I liked the way he played in New York a lot better than the previous outing."

Ruff was also asked about injured skaters Paul Gaustad and Drew Stafford.

"Gaustad's doing a lot better," Ruff said. "He may skate with the club today. He's probably closer to a return than Stafford."

To compensate for injuries, the club brought up Mark Mancari from Portland.

"He'd gone really well offensively," Ruff said. "When you call somebody up, a lot of that insight comes from the coach down there, (Portland Pirates head coach) Kevin (Dineen),"

Ruff also talked about the re-emerging topic of hits to the head, as well as Ryan Miller's dealings with "The Today Show," "Vanity Fair," and "The Wall Street Journal." Hear that in our Audio Vault.
