Ryan Miller returns to his home state, only to fall short to Detroit on the road. Brian Rafalski rips a slapshot by Miller 31 seconds in to overtime to give the Red Wings a 3-2 decision over the Buffalo Sabres at Joe Louis Arena on Saturday night.
It was certainly a sloppy start for the Sabres. Detroit scored two quick goals within the first 3:15 of the contest. A bad bounce off the boards set up the Red Wings' first tally, when Pavel Datsyuk found the puck on his stick and threw it in to the back of the net.
Just 1:13 later, Patrick Eaves treats Buffalo blue liner Craig Rivet like a road cone and skates right around him to get in front of Miller. The Sabres netminder tried to poke the puck away but it deflected up and rolled up his arm and in to the back of the net.
Buffalo finally woke up after that second goal. Jochen Hecht scored the next two goals in the game to get the Sabres at least a point in the game.
Miller made 34 saves in the losing effort, and falls to a 1-2-1 lifetime record at Detroit. The Sabres have now dropped two in a row.
Next up for Buffalo is another road game, a Tuesday night affair against the Atlanta Thrashers. It will be the first time Clarke MacArthur opposes his original NHL team. As always you can hear the play by play coverage on WGR Sports Radio 550.
GOLLY Darcy we love this team! Glad we didn't make any blockbusters! Oh i forget those don't happen at deadline...or ANY time! Keep feeding the machine folks! Tommy needs a new Boat down in Florida, your not a true fan unless your spending! BBBAAAAAHHHHHH
03/13/2010 11:24PM
Not a bad effort.....
....but as usual, the "big guns" fail to come up with even strength goals. Miller did his job. This year is looking very much like the year when Hasek carried us to the finals with no help from the top forwards. And Ruff then, like now, willget credit for doing nothing.
03/14/2010 12:15AM
Was this a surprise?
Hope not. Even Paul Hamilton predicted this loss. They just play terrible back to back games.
03/14/2010 12:23AM
idk
what to make of this team. think they'll be lucky to make it past the first round in the playoffs.
03/14/2010 4:32AM
i tried
to watch the game with two buddies who dont like hockey, they were more interested with the freakin leaf game that was on. i am so tired of boring lindy ruff hockey, this team needs a real hockey coach who can ride miller just like lindy does but at least let talented guys like vanek play their type of game. ENOUGH RUFF!!! i have never thought that untill i watched the game with two people who pointed out how terrible the sabres play to me. what a bushleague game, what a bushleague coach, are they ever going to play hard for an entire game? not while lindy is coach thats for sure. i am ready to join the fire lindy club, what a joke.
03/14/2010 4:48AM
DONT BLAME LINDY!!!!!!
its not lindys fault that they lost. its not lindys fault that a guy like raffi torres comes in with 19 goals and has NONE with the sabres. its the players! its the GM!!!! its the owner!!!its larry quinn!!! but its NEVER LINDY!!!!! how great a coach he is, all of these talented players must love playing lindys system, it works so well. the "system" that lindy talks about is the coat-tail system, as in ride the coat-tails of a hot goalie system. miller and hasek, atta boy lindy keep up the great work. and keep blaming everything possible but lindy sabre fans because its not lindys fault!!! other people say hes good!!!!!!! thats the argument for lindy! woooo i love boring, emotionless, effortless, hockey!! YAYYYYYY LINDYYYYYYYYYY lets hope miller plays like hasek or we lose!!! WHAT A FREAKING OVERATED COACH!!!!! shhhhhhh dont EVER mention lindy buffalo fans, its everyones fault but his.
03/14/2010 4:49AM
as usual
the sabres play 20 minutes out of a 60 minute game. think thats going to cut it in the playoffs lindy?
03/14/2010 4:51AM
why
is torres on the fourth line? what was the point of geting a guy who plays hard and scores if hes going to play with grier? i dont get lindys decisions sometimes. makes no sense, why is hecht on the top two lines instead of torres. give me a break. everyone we ever get turns into a bum because of ruff. the ruff commments usually get to me but im starting to come around
03/14/2010 8:23AM
Same MotownTune.
... No skaters/shot blockers. I guess I don't have mention who to thank.
03/14/2010 8:30AM
At least...
Vancouver beat the Senators
03/14/2010 9:04AM
Current Sabres
this team reminds me of the way Lindy played when he was a Sabre. Showed up some games and took off others. He played on all those teams that got ousted every year in the first round of playoffs.
03/14/2010 9:51AM
My Take
Fire Ruff and Regeir!
03/14/2010 10:02AM
Sabres Got Robbed! Hecht 4 Mayor!
The Sabres DOMINATED that game last night in Detroit and should have been rewarded 2 points instead of 1. Miller was amazing per usual and the Sabres & Hecht DOMINATED play after going down 2-0 early. Detroit benefited from a lucky bounce and also got a gift PP at end of regulation due to one of the many DUMB penalties in the NHL. Either way you look at it though. Sabres can play with any team in the league and beat them. Detroit needed zeebra help to win that game. Sabres another point of the fading Sens.
03/14/2010 10:05AM
Howard Elite, Miller Humiliated!
I think Ryan needs to give his Silver to Jimmy Howard, i of course advocated trading Miller to Detroit where he belongs for Howard. To be shown up by a fellow olympic team mate is embarassing!
03/14/2010 10:06AM
RE: i tried
It may be more of a case where you should just stop watching hockey all together if you think a LAFFS game is more exciting than watching the 1st place Sabres play. At least your friends self admittadly dont like hockey. They probably thought the Laffs were an NHL team. Whats your excuse? I would much rather have a style of play the Sabres have that have them in 1st in the NE & 3rd in the East then the amateur hockey Toronto plays against an even worse Edmonton team. Get a life Dope!
03/14/2010 10:11AM
Alfredsson a Bust! Sens Fading!
What a joke Alfredsson is. He is single handedly destroying the SENS chances this year. Another poor effort and Vancouver punks Danny and the fading Sens 5-1. Talk about boring hockey and a guy that needs to be in minor league hockey. Or Alfie could play for the LAFFS. he would fit in good there. His awful numbers would be among the leaders on a last place team
03/14/2010 10:18AM
re:miller sucks
U r a complete moron!!! Miller is the ONLY reason they got a point in Detroit. U didn't even watch that game u idiot.
03/14/2010 10:21AM
Teams take on character of GM and Coach
They are weak, lazy and have no heart. That sounds a lot like Darcy and Lindy!
03/14/2010 10:48AM
Re: why
I don't get it either what Ruff is doing. Scoring goals isn't in the system I guess. I'd like to see Torres with Connolly to see what comes out of it for more than the overtime goal against the Flyers Connolly scored and Torres was partof it.
03/14/2010 11:45AM
Gained a point on Ottawa
Now three points up with two games in hand. Where is the 9th place crew?
03/14/2010 11:48AM
Detroit back in 8th...
Can you smell another 1st round elimination of the Sharks. What's that phone number again??
03/14/2010 12:53PM
re:gained a point
seriously? because i remember a 14 point lead with 3 games in hand on the sens about two months ago. howd that work out?
03/14/2010 1:05PM
re:re:i tried
have you ever actually watched another hockey game idiot? the leafs are absolutely horrible but at least they play hard and can score goals. i hate the leafs, i hope they never win a game again, i hate leaf fans, players, coaches, gms, everything, but there is no escaping the fact that they play hard to every whistle in every game. can we say that about the sabres? sabres show minimal effort for one period of every game and expect to win in the playoffs, thats not going to happen. Get some friends dope!!
03/14/2010 1:08PM
re:re: tried
what style of play is that? sit back and hope miller makes 45 saves a night? thats what it looks like to me, if the leafs had miller theyd be in the playoffs right now. at least they show some effort unlike the sabres who just show up and get paid. sabres need a coach who can at least get something out of the players instead of running talent into the ground like ruff does with every single player that has ever played for him.
03/14/2010 1:41PM
Ottawa
I love this "watch" on Ottawa. This is what sabre fans do. Obsess over a team that has about as much chance as winning a cup as we do. Let's talk about Washington or Pitt as those are actually teams we would have to beat to get a cup. Typical Buffalo loser mentality, blame "refs" or Ottawa who was no where in the picture until Ryan became average as usual. where's the olympic "hero" now? The ovations are hushing, the interviews drying up, Ryan your back to being irrelevant. Jimmy Howard superstar!!
03/14/2010 2:07PM
miller
hey miller played a great game. For all of you calling for regiers head, i agree. If you want to win a cup you have to spend money on some talent. GOOOOOOOOO SABRES..
03/14/2010 2:24PM
Really?
Playoffs are playoffs. 100% different then regular season.
03/14/2010 4:18PM
re: why and the 3 posts before
nice too see that while most of us were asleep especially with the clock turned ahead an hour that you felt the need to make 4 posts between that time. i'm going to guess it was the same person cause who else would feel the need to be on a message board at that time. i got it the first post, you don't like lindy but once was good enough. as far as the last post. torres wasn't on the 4th line. the 4th line was kennedy-ellis-mair but hey why let the facts get in the way. why is hecht on the top 2 lines, i don't know maybe his 2 goals last night has already surpassed his goal and point total from last year with 15 games still to go and getting little power play time but hey he has no business playing, you're probably one of those guys who would like to see jeff cowan up here instead, a guy who hasn't played in the league in 2 years but hey you know more than everyone else. i also guess it was lindy's fault that myers shot the puck out of play which lead to the goal but hey let's blame the guy in the suit and tie. you're a typical whiney little sabres fan who thinks everyone on this team sucks and everyone on other teams is better. i hope you enjoyed the epic leafs-oilers game what a great battle between the basement dwellers of the respective conferences. who wouldn't want to see that. oh and great the leafs play hard alot of good it did them but hey why should the standings matter right. oh and one more thing no I'm not a ruff fan. do i think he's perfect absolutely not. but you're the typical guy who will blame him for the losses but for the wins he gets no credit. you can't have it both ways. but hey we wouldn't be buffalo fans without whining, crying, complaining, and having self contradicting double standards. now go get some sleep. loser.
03/14/2010 4:33PM
KENNEDY IS AWFUL
hardly noticeable out there. How he maintains a roster spot and Mancari or Ennis doesnt is beyond me
03/14/2010 6:02PM
Re: miller
That was vintage average in regulation. OT, yes no chance.
03/14/2010 9:18PM
Miller
will win the Vezina. Then what's your excuse going to be?
03/14/2010 10:55PM
re re re: i tried
Yeah what a fool I am watching a 1st place team instead of that joke of a Laffs team. Exactly what "effort" do the Laffs show night in; night out? That they are more creative in losing than the Sabres are in winning? Are the Sabres in 1st in the NE? Are the Sabres 3rd overall in the East? I love fools like you who are more concerened with style points than actual points as in standings & wins.
03/14/2010 11:06PM
re re re: i tried con't
I don't doubt that Miller could take the Losers of the NHL (LAFFS) and make them a playoff team, but relax on the "effort" part. So the Laffs throw 6 goals up on Edmonton and they are a better team than Buffalo???? I feel sorry for these so called friends of yours that rely on you to provide hockey insight. No wonder theyre not hockey fans. The laffs score lessa goals then Buffalo does. What "effort" is that showing? Or maybe its the multi year consecutive streak of no playoffs for the Laffs that has you impressed with theyre effort. Again, if you want to compare a 6-4 win against the worst team in the league as opposed to a 3-2 OT loss agaisnt the loaded Red Wings than be my guess, but understand what a moron you sound like
03/15/2010 11:52AM
Re: Miller
What's your excuse for why he can't win the cup or a gold medal? The Vezina is not a championship. I could care less about the Vezina.
03/15/2010 1:14PM
Fire
Regier, Quinn...KEEP RUFF!! Great coach just doesnt have the players.
03/15/2010 1:42PM
Vezina
The Vezina is an individual award and speaks to his individual ability. The gold medal and Stanley Cup are team achievements and therefore are dependent on the team around Miller. So, if we're speaking of Miller's individual abilities, which you often do, the Vezina is more relevant. Anymore easy questions for me?
03/15/2010 2:22PM
re: vezina
team aside who's responsible for letting in or stopping goals? Face it there are only a few Haseks or Roy's around, Ryan isn't even close, doesn't have the mental makeup. I mean come on now he's still apparently grieving over someone who died years ago? The minute your a goalie and don't have control over your emotions your done. Watch trump, you have to detach yourself from emotion and sometimes be tough to be successful.
03/15/2010 4:07PM
regier
again people, Golisano won't let him overspend and in case you don't know it, we almost at cap limit with what players we have now.
03/15/2010 5:10PM
Re: Vezina
Miller undoubtedly has an important role, but he's not responsible for forwards not scoring goals. Your hate for Miller aside, outside of Myers, he is surrounded by relative mediocrity. If you put a truly average player in net for this team (let's say Theodore), they're probably among the Canes, Islanders and Panthers right now.
