Sabre forward Tim Kennedy has been awarded a one-year, $1 million salary for the 2010-2011 season by an arbitrator. According to the NHL's Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Sabres are not eligible to walk away from an award lower than $1,611,180.
Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier spoke to the press about the ruling, and was taken aback by the ruling a little bit.
"For us it was a little higher than we expected," stated Regier. "But we'll work with it, Tim is a player we think can improve, we expect him to improve and we'll work with him in that regard."
Talking about what would be a solid contribution from Kennedy, Regier said anywhere from 35 to 45 points for the forward would be a great year for him.
In a broader discussion, Regier was asked about the state of the roster and if the team had anything else lined up.
"Well we're still looking at discussion with other teams and players that are out there," said Regier. "Right now I think we're fairly close to being set. There may be one or two things that maybe if we can do it we will but right now we'll start gearing up for training camp."
Kennedy's arbitration hearing was Tuesday, July 27th. He registered 10 goals and 26 points last season. Kennedy also picked up a goal and 2 assists in the playoffs.
In other Sabres' news, Buffalo Sabres GM Darcy Regier announced today the Sabres have agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent forward Dennis McCauley.
McCauley (8/15/1985, 6’3”, 225 lbs.) spent last season with Worcester (AHL), where he collected 14 points (10+4) and 84 PIMs in 45 games with the Sharks.
The native of Billerica, Mass., played four years of college hockey at Northeastern (2005-09) where he picked up 45 points (22+23) in 129 games. McCauley also played with Sioux City of the USHL from 2003-05.
