Pittsford, NY (WGR 550) -- Chan Gailey had his team out on the field a little before 3:00 and they didn't wrap up until 5:20. Gailey had them in pads for day one which Dick Jauron never would've even considered. Gailey said, "We're in training camp aren't we? Training Camp is time to go to work. We only have a certain amount of opportunities to get out here and get better and be a physical football team, so we take advantage of every opportunity that we have."
As you know Trent Edwards started camp as the number one QB. Stevie Johnson got the nod opposite Lee Evans at WR. Gailey said Johnson earned the opportunity from OTA's. As far as Hardy goes he said, "I thought at the start of OTAs that he was just average. That's exactly what I thought. But as we went further and further and further down the line, he continued to improve. He got a better idea of what's going on and he's right in the thick of things. There's a bunch of them and that's a good thing probably. We have a bunch of guys. It looks like Lee is the only one that's proven and everybody else has got to prove themselves and we'll see who rises to the top. Roscoe Parrish is still in the slot.
On the offensive line it was LT Jamon Meredith, LG Andy Levetre, C Geoff Hangartner, RG Eric Wood and RT Cornell Green. The TE was Shawn Nelson.
Fred Jackson was of course the #1 RB.
On defense the front three were Marcus Stroud, Kyle Williams and Dwan Edwards. The LB were Chris Kelsay, Kawika Mitchell, Andra Davis and Reggie Torbor. Aaron Maybin has already been demoted to second team.
Drayton Florence remains ahead of Leodis McKelvin at CB with Terrence McGee on the other side. Donte Whitner and Jairus Byrd are the safeties.
What was interesting today is the team spent over an hour on individual periods and special teams. It's obvious Gailey is stressing fundamentals in football and will be coaching them long and hard.
Edwards first pass of the day was overthrown to a wide open Lee Evans, but he had some other good throws as the day went on.
Hardy wants to give Johnson some competition. Brian Brohm under threw him on a long pass to the end zone, but he went over Lydell Sargeant to make a nice catch.
Levy Brown didn't get many chances but he did hit Felton Huggins on a nice throw down the left sideline.
Ryan Fitzpatrick was his usual self. He had some great throws and then he couldn't complete the easy pass. He flopped one out to the flat that was promptly picked off by McKelvin.
I would say a sparse crowd here at St.John Fisher. The night practices are usually well attended and the first one will be tomorrow at 7:00. The team is also on the field in the morning, but that is closed to the public.
