Bills Gilmore learned a lot from first season

Even though he has just one NFL season under his belt, Stephon Gilmore is clearly the player the Bills will rely on to be their shutdown cornerback.

What should Bills GM Doug Whaley do next?

Congratulations Doug Whaley on rising to the lofty status of NFL general Manager at the young age of 40.  One of the many perks that comes with the job is having media and fans give you many suggestions on how to best perform.  So here it goes.

Bottoms up - Sabres shouldn't need long rebuild

As you watch the NHL playoffs you may be inclined to feel like the Sabres are "far away" because they don't look like they could compete with the teams that are still playing. You'd be wrong to say that. While there is work to be done, to suggest it will take multiple years just to be competitive, is to take this team off the hook.

Bills should make it Manuel's job to lose

Doug Marrone wants to have a competition for the job of starting quarterback.  I completely understand that but I totally disagree with it. It should be EJ Manuel's job to lose.

Read what Howard Simon thinks about Geno Smith after watching the West Virginia quarterback in last Saturdays win over Texas.

SIMON: Rock Bottom for Bills...Again

I was struggling while trying to figure out how to start this column and I thought taking the dog out for a walk and getting some fresh air might help get the writing juices flowing.

As I passed my wife on the way out of the house, she looked at me and said “This team will be the death of you. You look old.”  It was that kind of day.

SIMON: Rush to Judgment on Defense?

So much for a honeymoon. One quarter of the way into his first season as Defensive Coordinator for the Buffalo Bills, Dave Wannstedt is already taking shots from fans. Read what Howard Simon has to say about Wannstedt and the performance of the defense through a 2-2 start.

SIMON: Bills Humbled by Pats

And you thought the season opening loss to the New York Jets was deflating?  The Bills and their fans suffered through a complete meltdown in the second half as the New England Patriots made a statement to the supposedly up and coming Bills. Read Howard Simon's thoughts on the game.

SIMON: Playing With The Big Boys

Wins the last two weeks by the Buffalo Bills have calmed the collective nerves of Bills nation. Nerves that were frayed by the opening day shellacking at the hands of the New York Jets.

But now its time to find out if the 2012 Bills can play with the big boys.  Sunday’s game with AFC East kingpin New England kicks off the toughest part of the schedule.

SIMON: Bills Gut One Out

The Bills were faced with adversity on the way to snapping an eight game road losing streak.  Despite losing dynamic running back C.J. Spiller, the Bills prevailed.  Click here to read Howard Simon's thoughts on the game.

SIMON: Time For Old School Football

Different week. Different opponent. But it’s the same story for the Buffalo Bills. As was the case against the Kansas City Chiefs in week two, the Bills face their second must win game of the young season in week three at Cleveland.

SIMON: Thank You Bills

Bills fans are dealing with plenty of anxiety these days. One thing you don't have to worry about is more regular season games in Toronto and fewer in Orchard Park.   Click here to read and to hear what Bills CEO Russ Brandon told WGR about the upcoming renewal of the Bills in Toronto series.

SIMON: A Complete 180

I don’t know what role this game will play in the outcome of the 2012 season and no, I did not make reservations for New Orleans(site of the Super Bowl) after the Bills romp over Kansas City. But I do know the team, the fans and the sports talk show hosts needed this one.....badly!!!

SIMON: Top College QB's To Watch

Bills CEO on snag in lease talks

There’s been a snag in talks about a new lease for the Buffalo Bills and it might mean a long term deal will not be in place by July 31, 2013 when the existing lease deal expires. But Bills CEO Russ Brandon says not to worry. Click here to find out why and hear his comments.

White EIS #1

WHITE: Eye in the Sky Week 1 - Mario's Debut

Buffalo Bills DE Mario Williams didn’t make much of an impact in his first outing with the team.  Williams was credited with 1 tackle and failed to get close to a single sack but it’s not entirely on him.  The All-22 shows us a Jets team with a good gameplan.  WGR's Jeremy White takes a deeper look...

SIMON: I Feel Like Charlie Brown

Now I know how Charlie Brown felt.  Actually there were two Charlie Brown feelings I had while watching the Bills destruction at the hands of the New York Jets.

Chapter One

Ready For Opening Day

You've been waiting for this day since March right? Ever since the Bills stunned the NFL by signing Mario Williams to the largest contract for a defensive player, you probably began your own countdown clock. Click here to read Howard Simon's thoughts on the season opener.

Legacy TBD

SIMON: What About Ralph Wilson's Legacy?

I’ve been thinking a lot about Ralph Wilson and the future existence of the Bills in Western New York lately. The latest story to make me wonder how much longer the Bills will be around was the passing of former Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens owner Art Modell. Click here to read my thoughts on what Wilson's legacy will be.

QB Solid

SIMON: Bullish on UB

As I was writing the UB Bulls season preview last week, I was thinking they’d be hard pressed to get to .500 this season and 6 wins shouldn’t be too much to ask for in Jeff Quinn’s 3rd season as Head Coach.

After watching the Bulls season opening loss at 6th ranked Georgia, I feel much better about the prospects for the 2012 season.

SIMON:Buffalo Bulls Season Preview

Another new face at starting quarterback, a running back who knocked James Starks out of the school record books and an improving defense are the main storylines for the 2012 University at Buffalo Bulls. Click here to read a season preview.

QB Struggling

SIMON: Fitz on the Fritz

Stop me if you've heard this one before. Summer is about to give way to fall. Pre-season football will thankfully give way to regular season football and we're talking about the struggles of the Bills starting quarterback.
Struggling QB's

SIMON: Jets Have Two Bad QB's

If you’re worried about how the Bills offense has looked through the first two games of the pre-season, it could be worse. They could be the New York Jets.

WR Battle

Hagan Making Inroads

Derek Hagan probably entered training camp on the outside looking in as far as a spot on the 53 man roster was concerned.  But a solid camp has likely elevated him, at the very least, to “on the bubble” if not the front runner for the final spot in the wide receivers group.

Great Luck

SIMON: Luck-Mania Anyone?

As you go through the Bills schedule, trying to figure out which games are wins and which are losses, I’ll bet you don’t spend much time thinking about the November 25th contest at Indianapolis. Don't lock that one in as a win just yet.

Merriman: "Best I've felt in three years"

A year ago the Bills needed Shawne Merriman to play like the guy who was “lights out” in San Diego.  Now they just need Merriman to be a situational pass rusher and that seems more realistic. Off season surgery has Merriman feeling like a new man as the Bills prepare for the pre season opener.

The Joker

Having some laughs with Marcell Dareus

Amidst the seriousness of training camp and the pressure of  high expectations for the 2012 Buffalo Bills, Marcell Dareus had a chance to sit back, relax and have some laughs(a few at our expense) during a visit with the WGR Morning Show on Friday.

The Bills \"Boss\"

SIMON: Mario reminds me of Bruce(Springsteen)

There's a major celebrity at Bills training camp.  That's what it feels like anytime Mario Williams takes to the practice field.  I sit in the stands to watch practice and will move around from time to time. No matter where I sit, the conversations around me usually center on big number 94.

Point To Prove

SIMON: Morrison is New, "Old Guy"

He was pretty much a non factor for the Buffalo Bills last season. But days before Kirk Morrison would have hit the unrestricted free agent market last March, the Oakland, California native opted to re-sign with the Bills for two years.  Click here to find out why.

SIMON: Sheppard Ready For Challenge

He's in the middle of the Bills defense, literally and figuratively. Read and listen to what Kelvin Sheppard has to say about his role on the defense this season.
Russ on WGR

Russ Brandon:"Time to take a meaningful step"

Buffalo Bills CEO Russ Brandon has been through quite a few Training Camp opening days in his time with the franchise but its been a long time since opening day featured the kind of buzz that surrounds this year's camp at St. John Fisher.

SIMON:What To Watch At Bills Camp/Part 2

There are plenty of intriguing story lines to follow on the Bills offense once training camp begins on Thursday.  Check out part two of my training camp preview.

SIMON: What to Watch at Bills Camp

My notebook is ready to go. On Thursday I'll be watching the Bills as they open training camp at St. John Fisher.  So what will I be watching over the next few weeks? Check out the first of two stories with the first focusing on the defensive side of the ball.
Big and Bold

WHITE: Bank on it

Elliott Friedman of CBC wrote Wednesday that there is a belief that the Buffalo Sabres offered both Zach Parise and Ryan Suter $100 million each.  It’s simultaneously surprising and...not.  I’ve tried to work through what it means.  Here’s my best guess...

Thurman Thomas: "I haven't been this excited in a long time"

Hall of Fame running back Thurman Thomas is as excited as everyone else in Bills Nation about the upcoming season.  Thomas shared some of his thoughts during an hour long, in studio visit to the WGR Morning show on Thursday.

SIMON: No Beast Mode, Just Beast

It wasn’t too long ago the Buffalo Bills had a player who used to refer to his playing style as “beast mode.” Now they have a player who will be a beast to handle this season.

SIMON: Ott Had Me at Hello

Don’t tell my wife but while I was out with her for an anniversary dinner last night(17 years she’s been stuck with me), I couldn’t get my mind off of Steve Ott.

SIMON: Local Kid Hopes to Make Good in NHL

Western New York has a strong history when it comes to producing players who are drafted by the NHL. There'll be another name added to the long list on Saturday when Dylan Blujus hears his name called out at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh.

Vincent/Bills

SIMON: Vincent Loves Bills

Former Buffalo Bill Troy Vincent has high hopes for the 2012 team. Vincent was a guest on the WGR Morning Show on Monday and shared his opinions on the Bills in addition to discussing his role as the NFL's Director of Player Engagement.

Major Moves?

SIMON: Big Week in Buffalo Sports

While your mind might be on summer vacation plans this week, here's a not so subtle reminder that this is a big week in the Sabres and Bills off seasons.  The Sabres get their first crack at making changes to a roster that missed the playoffs last season and the Bills get in their final workout before next month's training camp.

SIMON: A Challenging NHL Draft

Kevin Devine has been involved in numerous NHL Entry Drafts but the Buffalo Sabres Director of Scouting calls this year’s draft the most challenging of them all.

King James

SIMON: A Night For The Ages

Un-Freaking-Believable.

That is the best way I can describe what I saw from LeBron James in his season saving victory over the Boston Celtics in game 6 of the NBA's Eastern Conference Finals. Notice I said "his" season saving victory and not "Miami's".  LeBron's Heat teammates had very little to do with the outcome.
Hall Of Famer

SIMON: Jeanneret Will Be Back

We’re all wondering what moves the Buffalo Sabres will make during the off season.  There is one announcement we can tell you to expect with 100% certainty.  Rick Jeanneret will be back for his 41st season calling Sabres games.

Amazin' Mets

SIMON:Never Thought I'd See The Day

Moments after the New York Rangers won their first Stanley Cup in 54 years, a long suffering fan in the delirious crowd at Madison Square Garden held up a sign that read “Now I can die in peace.” I thought of that sign last Friday night.

Stevie

Stevie sets sights high

The Buffalo Bills might have something this season that they didn't in 2011, a healthy Stevie Johnson.  Johnson's offseason groin surgery was a procedure to repair an injury suffered in training camp last season.  He played through the injury, waited for it to heal, and finally decided to go under the knife.  Hear what it all means, here.

Raring To Go

SIMON: High Expectations for Bills Defense

Kyle Williams has been on defenses that have been mediocre to bad to downright awful in his 6 year Buffalo Bills career.  Williams, like many others inside and outside of the organization, expects this season to be different.
