The Buffalo Bills have found themselves a new backup quarterback, and this one is likely going to stick.
The Bills have officially signed former Chicago, Denver, Kansas City and Dallas quarterback Kyle Orton to serve as the backup to starter EJ Manuel. Orton has 70 career starts to his name and has won exactly half of them. Over his eight years of experience, the quarterback has thrown for 15,019 yards, 83 touchdowns and 59 interceptions with a 58.5 completion percentage.
Orton was thought to be the top backup in Dallas when the offseason began in 2014, but chose not to report to offseason workouts and instead mulled retirement from the NFL. In the final year of his three-year contract with the Cowboys, Orton was officially released by the team in mid-July.
His contract with the Bills will have a choice for the quarterback. According to Tim Graham of The Buffalo News, the one-year deal also includes a player option for a second season with the team.
Financial terms of the contract have yet to be disclosed, but a league source tells WGR Sports Radio 550 that it's for "top backup money." Orton will take over for Jeff Tuel as the main backup quarterback to Manuel. The Bills’ efforts with both Thad Lewis and Jordan Palmer as a potential second-string quarterback failed this summer, leading to the release of both players over the past four days. The team later released Tuel on Saturday.
He'll be the starting Quarterback by week 7, and I won't be the least bit surprised.
The First Sentence Should Have Read......
"The Buffalo Bills have found themselves a new STARTING QB". He will be the full time starter by week 4 or 5, this is the end for EJ. I am not saying Kyle is the answer, but he is leaps and bounds way better than our current QB.
What quarterback do you ride 4 entire season?
Should kyle Orton be our savior and end this 14 year playoff curse, once and 4 all?
Thank goodness. I feel like hope has been restored. I have him starting after 3 games if watching EJ struggle.
from day one the Bills have fumbled the ball- once Kolb got hurt they should have found another experienced QB- instead they sign players who weren't good so not to compete with Princess EJ- then with all this? neither backup QB was given enough time to develop either- Lewis was lucky enough to play a few games where Tuel played one game and lost and was not given another chance- when half ur team is so messed up? they are not going to win many games
his career has really bottomed out - he's signed to be the starter with the Bills ... he should have retired.
You've been out of football and I know you wanted to retire, but how about taking a few million to babysit our crown prince. I gave Branch 3 million and he didn't even have to call or stay sober. Come on Kyle this is the easiest money you can make. PS don't worry about the playbook it's so dumbed down, anyone can learn it.
HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN
Before you start Buffalo Bill bitchen this guy took JERRY JONES to the cleaners. I wont explan so you can do your own research. He's decent and can take bills at least to playoffs. Did O Line QUIT in last two games to set EJ up since they know he SUCKS at this point in his career. Actually they never planned on having him as the starter.
I just went from 0 - 16 with EJ to 9 - 7 with this guy.
Now We Know Why Marrone Blew Up at Whaley
Kyle is no dummy. He played Dallas for his $5 million and waited for the right time for him. Joe six packs. Don't ask why Whaley didn't sign him sooner.
Had his BEST year with a lousy Brocos team
Check his stats. It wasn't his fault with 20 touchdowns versus 9 pics. This guy is better than decent
And The Bills nation breathed a collective sigh of relief... Finally a compentant QB. Welcome to Buffalo Kyle Orton. This exact move should have been made way back when he was first released by Dallas, but hey, better late than never! Even though Orton doesn't know the offense yet, I finally feel much more comfortable about the Bills QB situation now and ultimately, this might end up saving Doug Whaley's job. The only thing I can think of as to why this wasn't addressed much earlier is the money/ownership situation. Maybe Russ Brandon would not approve the funds necessary to go and get a good backup QB before this. Maybe it took the team starting to implode for him to finally say - "ok, go spend some money for a QB".
wow that makes sense
Finally a move that has a purpose. im guessing that this move will also spell the end of TJ Graham with the Bills. hey remember when they chose him before Russell Wilson.
Send EJ to the showers
Big mike has his back.
Not as high profile as a Mike Vick, but has a good resume. Looked good for Dallas against the Eagles last year. Good enough to take over if EJ falters or gets hurt, but old enough that EJ could still develop and re emerge in a year or two down the road .
Interesting... Orton's numbers in his 4th year match what many are hoping for EJ in his 2nd
why not wait until game seven or eight? Take your time filling the most important position on the team, whaley. While this is a good pickup, it should have been done much earlier so he could learn the offense. Then again, the offense is so pathetic it shouldn't take more than a couple of days to learn the two page playbook Hackett uses. Let me know when we get a competent GM and coaches, then I'll get excited.
Why the wait?
I don't mind this move at all, but I do question why it took until now. Orton will be starting games this year and it may not be prompted by a Manuel injury.
A bona fide professional QB?
In Buffalo. Give EJ a game and a half to show something, then YOINK!
Not the savior but good pickup to help EJ learn to deal with so many voices in his ear. JUST GO PLAY and you'll be great. GO BILLS!!
Along with getting Brandon Spikes to sign, this may be the best move Whaley has made this year. Orton will probably be the starter after EJ gets hurt again or continues his subpar performances. If the line can hold up and keep Orton protected, we may actually have a QB that can get our talented receivers the ball. There may be a sliver of hope after all for this season.
Landon cohen top playmaker in the offseason you let go why is that bad mistake
Is Vick available
Meet The Buffalo Bills New Starting QB
Now EJ can quietly fade away. Sure, the current regime who drafted EJ will still do all they can to justify drafting him, but the writing is on the wall for him.
Can not hurt!
This can not hurt as a viable back-up. He may even be the starter in week three if EJ gets pounded the first two weeks. After 4 P.M. Saturday we may be able to pick some more cast offs and make a presentable offense. What a laugh!
This guy should be the starter
Good, now cut EJ.
Ladies and Gentlemen....
Lets have a big welcoming hand for Mr. Kyle Orton...The Buffalo Bills New Starting Q B.
is a good get Mr. Whaley.
Finally grabbed a decent QB. Whoever thinks he is garbage has not seen him play or pay attention to football. He is a distributor and will put the ball in our playmakers hands, and not get Sammy killed.
Are we sure he's the backup?
Is he starting over EJ?
Orton is more than a solid backup
Always liked this guy, He's no superstar but if we need him to replace EJ for injury or bad play he will probably be the best qb we've had in ages.
will never pull ej out of a game , except for injury, that would be admitting he was a bad pick.
better than ej
Orton will be starter before long...just you wait...good signing
Sunday October 19th, Starter
After The Bills fall to 2-4, He gets the starting job against the Vikings October.
He will be starting by week 4 or 5 easily, that is if EJ stays the same. He just is not a NLF QB at this point, can't even say EJ is a decent back up.
....when the best news you've heard all season is the signing of a journeyman QB.
He had to sign
Sounds like Orton wanted to retire but "Quitting the NFL would have potentially cost Orton $3.4 million of signing bonus money that the Cowboys were planning to recoup in the event he walked away." Any port in a storm.
by by EJ
The coaches know we have a problem and this is our short term solution
Well it was obvious to me that Jordan Palmer was brought in only to play "sacrificial lamb" the last exhibition game against Detroit.
Orton has experience as a starter around the league. And should be able to pick up the Bills unimaginative offense quickly. I mean, it is not that difficult to throw a one yard pass. But I read that Orton was released in July. WHY didn't the Bills get him then ???
Perhaps the Bills should look to Detroit's Rookie Kellen Moore for a try-out. Looks like he might be cut....
Dave - RVA
EXACTLY... THAT'S HOW FAR THIS ORGAN EYE ZATION HAS FALLEN. KEEP BUYIN TICKETS THOUGH!
Now Lets Go Get
Torelle Pryor....again not the long term solution, but is better than EJ, then we can figure out how we get a starting QB with no 1st round draft pick next year.
Cleveland liks it
With every move the Bills make, the Browns smile gets bigger. We could have had Evans and had number one overall next year.
Not sure about the quarterback.....really.....at least this guy can really challenge manuel...offense looked great in the preseason didn't it
BETTER BACKUP THAN 2013 SEASON...THAT'S IT.
This was the plan all along: Manuel and Orton (a better version of Kevin Kolb) on the active roster; Tuel on practice squad; and they would have kept either Dixon or Lewis as a third qb if they played lights-out in training camp and pre season...which they did not.
What's with all the hooplah?
P.S. The BILLS will start the season 4-0...I should leave my phone #, so that I can be congratulated for such a bold (yet not surprising to me) prognostication.
