Bottoms up - Sabres shouldn't need long rebuild

As you watch the NHL playoffs you may be inclined to feel like the Sabres are "far away" because they don't look like they could compete with the teams that are still playing. You'd be wrong to say that. While there is work to be done, to suggest it will take multiple years just to be competitive, is to take this team off the hook.

Rolston's real test - Unleashing Potential

Clearly one of Ron Rolston’s jobs is to win hockey games.  However, with the Sabres talking more about the long term, and a team that can make multiple runs in the playoffs, WGR's Jeremy White says the list of goals should start and stop with a select group of players.

'Ell of a Hit

Montreal's Lars Eller was drilled by Ottawa's Eric Gryba in the Canadiens' playoff opener.  Eller was taken off the ice on the stretcher after donating some blood to the ice surface.  Gryba has a hearing.  Does the league have a problem?

Star Power - Bills grab some, Sabres to give it up?

The Buffalo Bills did things right at the NFL Draft.  The Sabres can get it done too, with or without the help of a lottery ball.  Buffalo is lacking for stars these days, and the near future could see us losing another big one, in Ryan Miller.  A new era begins for both teams, and we will need stars if it's ever going to work.

Attitude Adjustment - Regier mentions of Patrick Roy are worth noting

Put your ear to the ice and you’ll hear something coming to the NHL.  Hall of Fame goaltender Patrick Roy is getting more attention each year and appears to be intent on coaching at the top level.  He says he’s ready.  Jeremy White asks: Could that be Darcy Regier’s big move?

Viewing Value - Clock ticking on Miller Time

It’s nothing new to suggest that an NHL team can survive without an “elite” goaltender, but with a little over a year on his contract, the Sabres are approaching a crossroads with Ryan Miller.  As the franchise looks to move forward, what’s the right move on Miller?  Jeremy White takes a crack at it...

Sabres Skating in "No Man's Land"

Four points out of a playoff spot versus 15th place - Jeremy White asks if you should be looking for the Sabres to go on a run to 8th place?  Or should you be more accepting of a total collapse that will reap a huge payoff come the NHL Draft? It’s tough to know when you’re here - in No Man’s Land.

Intent to Injure?

You make the call

Sounding off on Ruff and Regier - What if you had a say?

Q: What do the Seattle Sounders have, that the Buffalo Sabres don’t?
A:  Fans that feel that their voices are heard.

The Sounders, a huge hit in the Pacific Northwest, have a VOTE on their General Manager’s job.  A fan vote.  Yes, you read that correctly.  The fans decide on the direction of the team.  What could it mean here?

Episode XV - A New Hope - Grigorenko Carrying All of Us

The Sabres have stumbled out of the gate in Lindy Ruff’s 15th year.  General Manager Darcy Regier received a contract extension just before the season.  As top brass seems more entrenched than ever, I find myself holding on to an idea and clinging to one 18-year-old player.

Buffalo's Pesky "Loser Mentality"

As the Bills search for a new head coach you're going to hear a lot of the loser's mentality.  The team has been unsuccessful on the field for more than a decade and that means that expectations are quite low when it comes to finding a new head man.  However, I'm here to suggest that you, yes you, shed the loser's mentality.

WHITE: Eye in the Sky - Bills hit deep ball - Can it change their game?

The Buffalo Bills offense has lacked a vertical passing game all season.  In this week's All-22 breakdown I'll show you the play that Ryan Fitzpatrick hit against the Jags, and just how much the threat of the long ball means to an offense.  We'll take a look at RG3 and his success.

Eye in the Sky - Bills/Colts - The difference between 7-4 and 4-7

The Bills loss in Indianapolis was yet another blow to the team's playoff hopes.  While Indy is off and running at 7-4, the Bills appear to be stuck once more in the middle of a losing season.  Are the Colts much better?  Not really.  WGR's Jeremy White takes you to the All-22 film to breakdown how Buffalo should have beaten Indy.

WHITE: Eye in the Sky - The Blame Game

Ryan Fitzpatrick's interception to end the game in New England had plenty of people knee-jerking to blame the QB.  The pick really isn't on Fitz. It's not just lip service from the team - check the tape.

Hull's Halloween Trick

Former Dallas Stars forward Brett Hull tweeted out this picture last night with the comment "Happy Halloween to all my friends in Buffalo!".

Might take a minute to see what it is.  Trick or treat!

Full Disclosure - NHL shares its offer to NHLPA

NHLPA Union Chief Donald Fehr has long suggested that the CBA negotiations should be made public.  Wish - granted.  This morning the NHL released the full terms of it's CBA proposal...

WHITE: Eye in the Sky - Week 6 - Spiller-time

The Buffalo Bills have two very good, maybe great, running backs on their roster.  Head Coach Chan Gailey admits it can be a bit difficult figuring out how to get them both the football.  Factor in that Fred Jackson might not be 100% healthy, and what we see on film, and the conclusion is clear.  CJ Spiller should start.

Monday Night Recap - Turf Monster gets Decker

The Denver Broncos staged a historic comeback on Monday Night Football.  Down 24-0, Peyton Manning led a 2nd half charge that saw the Broncos score the game's final 35 points.  The highlight of the night though belongs to Eric Decker.  Actually, make that the lowlight.

WHITE: Eye in the Sky - Week 5 - Just a few plays, right?

Through the first few breakdowns we’ve taken a look at Mario Williams, Cordy Glenn, Tom Brady and Ryan Fitzpatrick.  We’re going big picture this time.  How in the world can a team lose by 42 points and still have had it’s chances to compete in a game?  Turns out it’s just a few plays...

Social Stevie - Johnson tweets frustrations and goals

Some Bills fans are looking for some more passion from players on the team.  Last night, via his twitter account, Stevie Johnson let out some of his frustrations.  Click here to see Stevie's tweets.

WHITE: Eye in the Sky Week 4 - Closing The Gap

The story of the Bills-Patriots game in Week 4 was New England’s running attack.  247 yards on the ground paved the way for the Patriots in the second half and showcased yet again how many ways a great QB changes the game.  WGR’s Jeremy White brings you the Week 4 breakdown.

WHITE: Beating Brady

Tom Brady is, without a doubt, one of the best QBs in the history of the NFL.  Some might suggest that he's showing signs of slowing down? WGR’s Jeremy White takes a look from Eye In The Sky.

WHITE: Eye in the Sky - Week 2 - Cordy's Big Day

Two games into the season there are few things that you can say with conviction about any NFL team.  It would seem safe to say at least one thing of the Buffalo Bills; they have a very good front five.  Jeremy White takes a closer look at Cordy Glenn.

WHITE: Eye in the Sky Week 1 - Mario's Debut

Buffalo Bills DE Mario Williams didn’t make much of an impact in his first outing with the team.  Williams was credited with 1 tackle and failed to get close to a single sack but it’s not entirely on him.  The All-22 shows us a Jets team with a good gameplan.  WGR's Jeremy White takes a deeper look...

WHITE: Bank on it

Elliott Friedman of CBC wrote Wednesday that there is a belief that the Buffalo Sabres offered both Zach Parise and Ryan Suter $100 million each.  It’s simultaneously surprising and...not.  I’ve tried to work through what it means.  Here’s my best guess...

Bernier's Blunder

Steve Bernier's ejection from Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals changed the course of the game.  The Kings tossed in three goal goals on the ensuing power play and rolled to victory to win the Stanley Cup.  How much blame does Bernier deserve?  Did Scuderi turn into the hit?

Scouting Session 9 - Booms that are busted up

Question:  What do the 2011-2012 Buffalo Sabres and the upcoming NHL Draft have in common?  Answer:  Injuries.  The injuries to the top prospects have made it a bit harder to nail down just where these prospects really should be picked.  Inside we break down the player, the injury, and the implication.

Stevie sets sights high

The Buffalo Bills might have something this season that they didn't in 2011, a healthy Stevie Johnson.  Johnson's offseason groin surgery was a procedure to repair an injury suffered in training camp last season.  He played through the injury, waited for it to heal, and finally decided to go under the knife.  Hear what it all means, here.

Scouting Session 8 - America's Got Talent

With the NHL’s Stanley Cup Finals set to start Wednesday night we are guaranteed one thing from the Devils and Kings - an American raising the Cup first.  Both teams are captained by U.S. born players.  It’s just one more sign pointing to an American explosion in the sport.

You Make The Call - Brown's Hit On Roszival

Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith was furious about Dustin Brown's hit on Michael Rozsival.  Brown caught Rozsival with a knee, and while the Kings heading to the Stanley Cup Finals, it's possible we could see a suspension.  Take a look, and play the part of Brendan Shanahan.

Scouting Session 7 - The Mystery Man, Mikhail Grigorenko

He’s been compared to Evgeni Malkin.  This week, former NHL GM Craig Button ranked him as the 20th best player in the NHL Draft.  Super-talent Mikhail Grigorenko is sliding down draft boards.  Could he slide to 12?  Would the Sabres pull the trigger?

With his gold medal at the World Championships, do you think Jhonas Enroth has done enough to have a crack as a starter?
