Fitzpatrick says farewell to Buffalo

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550)  -- Whether you loved or hated his play on the field, it was hard not to think of former Buffalo Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick as a personable, down-to-earth guy that happened to be the starting quarterback of an NFL team. Just hours after learning of his release, Fitzpatrick did a one-on-one interview with WGR's Joe Buscaglia, reflecting on his time in Buffalo and what led to his release in 2013.

Because of how important a role Fitzpatrick played throughout the past three seasons, here is the transcript of the conversation in full:

Joe Buscaglia: A bittersweet day for you, talk about the decision and how it all played out from your perspective. How the day went.

Ryan Fitzpatrick: Well it was an interesting day for me. I was in New York City flying back to Arizona when the news broke and so it was good and bad. It was bad obviously because I couldn't call anybody to discuss it and that stuff, but there was WiFi on the plane so we had the iMessage and the email and stuff just to stay in contact. It was very good because when I got off the plane, just all the text messages and voicemails and things that I received, tremendous support and thank you's and everything from teammates and former teammates, and people throughout the Bills organization. It was a hard day for me just to move out from the Buffalo area, we love the fans, our neighbors… we've  got some lifelong friends now that live there. So that's one of the things aside from the football and the business part of it, it was the personal part of it is what really makes it tough.

JB: With the deadline looming, were you caught by surprise all at once? Did you have an idea something like this decision was coming?

RF: No. Throughout the process, maybe the last few weeks or so, I've been in constant communication with Buddy talking things out, trying to figure out some sort of solution to the roster bonus, the salary and all that. This isn't something that all of a sudden was thrown at me, I was blindsided by it, this is something that we talked about for a week or two. It was a lot of just private conversations. It was nice for it to be kind of left between me and him and not played out through the media. It stinks. I really did enjoy being a Buffalo Bill, and unfortunately we couldn't get anything worked out.

JB: Did the Bills come to you with an offer to restructure your contract at all?

RF: There were discussions about it. I don't want to get in to all the numbers and what everything was talked about. It was just one of those things we just couldn't agree on and didn't come close to agreeing on.

JB: Favorite memories of Buffalo after four seasons here?

RF: I've got so many good memories. I've got as many off-the-field as on in terms of the relationships and the people that we've met. It's such a great place to live and to raise a family, so that's something we'll always appreciate and remember fondly. The first one playing wise that popped in my head is when we beat New England and just kind of the way the fans had reacted to that victory. The fever within Buffalo, I mean all that was really cool. Watching Fred kind of throw the flag around after the game in appreciation of the fans. That might be maybe the biggest highlight for me in my playing days in Buffalo. There were certainly a lot of them and a lot of it is just with the guys in the locker room. Just being able to see somebody like Stevie Johnson mature and become the player that he's become from a guy that really didn't get to be on the field. There's a lot of that too that didn't just happen in one game or one play, but over the four years that I was there.

JB: Regrets during your tenure?

RF: I don't know if regret is the right word, but the biggest thing is the fact that we didn't get it done the last few years. With Chan, his whole staff being let go after the season. That was a guy that gave so many people on this roster right now opportunities to play and to shine and guys have stepped up and took advantage of opportunities. The fact that we weren't able to win, not only to win for the city of Buffalo because they certainly deserve it, but for a man like Chan, that's probably something I was most disappointed that I couldn't do a better job of that, a better job of bringing in more wins for a guy that put a lot of faith in me.

JB: When you heard the Tarvaris signing, and what Marrone said about an open competition, were you kind of rejuvenated by the idea that maybe you're not done in Buffalo?

RF: I don't know what they're going to do in the draft. Obviously I'm not the one making those decisions, but you kind of have an idea at this point. But looking at the current roster, I don't think there was any way I wasn't gonna be the guy for this next season. And so, that was my mindset going in to it. Just to continue to try and be the guy that leads the charge to turn this thing around. Obviously they went in a different direction, and that's the way that the NFL works. I can't say Buddy didn't give me my fair shot. I had a couple of years to go in there and make things happen, and it just didn't work out. They're ready to move on and so we've got to move on.

JB: Find yourself pressing at all this past season with the implications combined with a poor start?

RF: No, I don't think so. I think by the end of the year, the last few games it's hard -- especially when the playoffs are out of the picture -- it's hard not to look ahead at what's to come. To think of all the different ways that it could play out at the end of the year, depending on how you did in those last few games with wins and losses. Did we show enough improvement, and obviously with a 6-10 record, we didn't show enough improvement for the coaches to stay around. But, I think towards the end of the year you definitely start thinking about that stuff but I don't think it affected my play, or I put more pressure on myself than I needed to.

JB: Buddy Nix's conversation with Mark Dominik, part of it involved you. Your thoughts when you heard what was said about you?

RF: I thought that was terrible for Buddy, for him to be put in that position. To have a private conversation with someone where you thought was a private conversation, and everything gets publicized and put on Deadspin and all that, that's not fair to him. That was my initial reaction. I felt bad for him. With that being said, you don't want to hear that stuff about yourself. I had plenty of conversations with Buddy in the last few weeks, and he is a guy that has always given it to me straight. He tells me how it is and what he thinks of me and all that stuff, and that's one of the things that I really appreciate about the guy and will always appreciate about him.

JB: What's next for you? Take a few days to reflect, or get back on the wagon and try and sell yourself in free agency?

RF: First I've got to probably help my wife carry my luggage from the car from my trip, that would be number one. But I mean yeah, there is obviously some stuff that we've just got to get squared away. We've got four kids. We had a life and a home in Buffalo, so there's some logistics and things that we have to worry about out there and get that stuff figured out. Sit and talking with the kids, them dealing with it and being okay with it. There's just so much that has nothing to do with football or the business side of football, but more the personal side with my family and friends and all that stuff. I think that will be the main focus the next few days. Obviously I have an agent for a reason, so, he'll be the one that will be fielding calls and trying to find another place for us to hopefully have a great experience.

JB: To put a bow on this, any final words about the FitzScream and how that will be remembered?

RF: (Laughs) That was just pure and utter joy. That was, I don't know, unbridled enthusiasm. That was me just out there, having fun, playing football, giggling like a school girl with all my teammates. That's all you can ask out of those games. To go out there and just to have fun and to have that enthusiasm. That will be one of my fondest and most embarrassing moments of the Bills.

Further proof....
...nice guys finish last. But he got paid, so good for him.
03/12/2013 10:46PM
Really?
If it was so great take a pay cut. You didn't deserve what you were being paid to begin with. 19 mil for nothing?? Not like you will find a better deal on the open market lol
03/12/2013 10:47PM
Really?
Take a pay cut if it was so great here. You were way overpaid 19 mil for what you did here for god sakes. Not like you will do better elsewhere!!
03/12/2013 10:47PM
Good Luck
You're a class act Fitz. Good luck to you.
03/12/2013 10:48PM
Great man
Fitz was a great man and someone I really loved watching play. Even if the game didn't end well he gave his all and was a class act. It's hard to say good bye to him. Hopefully he and the Bills are one step closer to future success.
03/12/2013 10:49PM
Good Luck
You're a classy guy Fitz. Good luck to you.
03/12/2013 10:56PM
TOUGH LIFE AHEAD?
Retiring to the most BEAUTIFUL STATE ARIZONA in the US as a MILIONAIRE!!!! Yeah I feel REAL SORRY for him! GET LOST!! EXTEND REGEIR NOW!
03/12/2013 11:06PM
Still believe in Fitz
Happen to love Fitz, his competitiveness, a lot of what he does on the field, and the kind of person he appears to be. Sorry he no longer is a Buffalo Bill and wish him absolutely the best down the line.

Yet another remanent of the horrid Jauron era finally goes
Fitzpatrick will join the ranks of Edwards, Losman, and Brohm as another utterly unmemorable, forgettable, below average QB that have plagued the Bills for the last 6 or 7 seasons. He just represents more wasted years the Bills frittered away without hiring a franchise QB, very similar to the coaching situation. Just to show the difference in QBs - the first year before Fitzpatrick joined the team, the Bills were 7-9 in 2008. He starts 8 games in 2009, and the Bills end up 6-10. Fitzpatrick's FIRST full season as starter - 2010, the team plummets to 4-12. Team creeped back up to 6-10, but Bills were clearly worse with Fitzpatrick as QB than with his predecessors. Contrast that with the Colts - when a quality QB like Andrew Luck comes aboard. Year before, 2011, they were a horrid 2-14. With Andrew Luck, a total turn around to 11-5 and a playoff appearance. I sincerely doubt if Fitzpatrick had 3 more seasons with the Bills that he could have captained the team above .500
03/12/2013 11:10PM
Hey Joe
Does Fitz still get paid any money by the Bills?
03/12/2013 11:19PM
Good Luck Fitz
Thanks for trying to get this city out of its losing ways Fitz.Your a good man and we wish you well wherever you go from here.
03/12/2013 11:32PM
Well?
Fitz gave it his all but it was just not good enough- I don't think many players can change "their" style that easily- Fitz is a good backup and can be depended to step in and win a game but over the long haul? nope- some are meant to be "Franchise" guys n others? reliable backups- there is no shame beig a backup if you are good and how many guys get to even play? Good Luck Fitz
03/12/2013 11:47PM
Hey Fitz........don't let the door hit you on you azz
It's about time the Buffalo Jills released this horrible QB. Fitz never has been and never will be a NFL quarterback. Heck, even the Cincy Bengals released him as their 2nd string QB. That's right, the Bengals didn't even want him as their 2nd string QB. Only a team like the Bills would think this guy was starter material. But this makes sense seeing as the Bills are the team that thought the following guys were starting QB's for their horrible team over the last 15 years: Trent Edwards, J.P. Losman, Kelly Holcomb, Drew Bledsoe, Alex Van Pelt, Rob Johnson, Doug Flutie and Todd Collins. The Buffalo Bills have always been and will always be L0SERS!
03/12/2013 11:56PM
CLASS ACT
Guess it had to happen. Good luck, think you'll be just fine.
03/13/2013 1:15AM
good guy
Not a great QB, but a good guy.
03/13/2013 2:45AM
Nice guy
Who cares, see ya later Ryan. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
03/13/2013 3:41AM
Good riddance!
Good riddance!
03/13/2013 4:23AM
Thank you Fitz!
A big thanks to Fitz for putting it all out there for the Bills and his teammates. Although it didn't work out (something we've all experienced at times), it was a pleasure just to witness a guy that took his very best shot both on the fieldand off with his teammates. Best of luck to you! -Paul from Beijing
03/13/2013 6:13AM
Thanks Sully and Bulldog!!
You led the charge to sign a 7th round journeyman QB with a sub .500 record to that insane contract. Now, instead of admitting how incredibly stupid you were you double down on it by saying he should have been paid like a starter just because he was a starter. WHAT???? It just goes to prove how terrible you are at your jobs. Spiller was a wasted pick? Extend Fitz even though he's under contract? End of the world to trade Lee Evans? You really should be embarrassed.
03/13/2013 7:13AM
Fitz will be OK...
If anything, he'll put that Harvard degree to good use and start investing his millions! Not too bad of a life...
03/13/2013 9:06AM
Fitzpatrick says farewell to Buffalo
I say farewell to him too. Let's move on and talk free agency and the two boats missed by Nix already in Wallace and Ellerbe. They both got nabbed by Miami. Great job already by idiot Nix. Joke, nothing but a joke! Losing Levitre was another joke. The whole organization is a JOKE!
03/13/2013 9:28AM
yea see ya
we we only will get 3rd tier free agents undrafted free agents and taxi squad players to sign here. what a mess we might as well be in the CFL
03/13/2013 9:39AM
don't think it was just about the pay cut....
whether he can or can't, i think fitz believes he can still be a starter somewhere and staying with buffalo would basically mean backup. i personally think he's better suited as a backup and with his experience in the league, there will be several teams interested in picking him up. it's going to be interesting to see where his career goes now. class act all the way and i wish him luck.
03/13/2013 9:44AM
Class Act
Great Guy, Great competitor, Great Heart, Average QB. You will be missed Fitz................Respect for throwing 3 picks in a half and coing out and throwing 3 TDS in the 2nd. NO FEAR! NO REGRETS.....gunslinger. Good luck.
03/13/2013 9:45AM
Sorry it didn't work out.
I liked Fitz. He was a father and husband first, football player second, he always was a team player, he never blamed anyone else for his shortcomings. And at the end of the day he still was gracious enough to thank Buddy Nix and company for the shot he got in Buffalo. I hope he gets a big fat back up contract somewhere with great WRs and a awesome O-line. STAY CLASSY FITZ!
03/13/2013 10:26AM
bills should sign
james harrison then he can get lost in Buffalo like Mario Williams..wouldnt be something..lol
03/13/2013 10:55AM
Thank You Fitz
Met the guy a couple times and he is just as down to earth as anyone else in Buffalo. A class act guy who just didn't have it to be starter on the field. He'll always have the memory of beating New England and I will have the memory of him doing it. Best of luck wherever you go, Fitz!
03/13/2013 11:19AM
A product of poor talent evaluation
Fitz is definitely a guy you would like to have a beer with, but his production on the field didn't come close to his salary, that's why guys like him, Kevin Kolb, Matt Cassell, etc. are on the outs (or deals being restructured like Vick). Two lessons from this Fitzstake: never negotiate a salary increase mid-year (for heaven's sake make sure the guy at least makes a Pro Bowl!) and if no one else wants a guy after being on an NFL roster for a few years, there is a good reason (Tom Brady may have been passed over in the draft, but once he hit his first NFL camp people knew he was special)
03/13/2013 11:44AM
Seriously people?
Nice enough guy, but he sucked as a starter. Better than Spent Backwards, but still, bad. He's a good back-up, he should've restructured for back-up money.
03/13/2013 12:34PM
Finally! Progress moving forward..
The Bills finally did the right thing and let FitzBackUp go. Now they can concentrate on getting a "real" QB, and not just a nice guy who everyone likes. Sorry but if you noticed this nice guy couldn't throw the ball past 15 yards without any accuracy. He was paid a little too much to hand the ball off to a good RB. Maybe he will land a job with the Jets. They seem to love Backups as their Starters. See you FitzBackup. Good luck in the CFL...
03/13/2013 1:45PM
Joe Marble mouth
Joe, were you out drinking last night? uh, I mean, uh, I mean...and this from a radio man paid for his speech?
03/13/2013 1:50PM
Nice try Fitz
Fitz is a class act - probably will be the best backup QB in the NFL. I'm sure he will be successful doing something else. The guy has a wife and kids, got paid a ton in Buffalo, and has a degree from Harvard (not to mention he has always appeared to be a classy guy). I'm sure he is going to be alright. This was the right move for the Bills though - he was not "the answer" at the QB position.
03/13/2013 2:58PM
the best
You needed help and did not get it. You will find a place.
03/13/2013 3:18PM
Au revoir to Fitz
Fitz is a class act and great asset for the City and Region. It is unfortunate it did not work out for him here. I was pulling for him all the way but it was not to be. It has not been cited before or at least I have not seen it but it seemed to me he was never the same after David Lee arrived on the scene with the goal of "changing Fitz's mechanices to improve his accuracy." Well he not only changed his mechanics he seemed to ruin him as he did not throw even the short crossing routes the same after Lee arrived. Anyone else agree?
03/13/2013 3:23PM
Sad to see Fitz go!
Yes, I am sad to see Fitz leave. He wasn't the only one on the field. Receivers didn't always catch his passes or they would drop them. Yes, he had interceptions, but name me ONE QB that didn't. And most of the season the defense was almost on-existent. Please don't put Fitz in the same category as the likes of Losman, and Rob Johnson, talk about losers. My very best wishes to Ryan and his family.
03/13/2013 6:18PM
I drank the kool aid
I have 2 Fitzpatrick jerseys for sale if any of you guys up there wanna buy them. 2 for 10 or best offer
03/13/2013 8:03PM
Thanks Fitz!
Such a classy guy. Good luck to you and your family.
03/13/2013 8:46PM
Thanks Fitzy........
now you don't have to work for a horses arse like Buddy Nix any more. Best of luck.
03/13/2013 10:52PM
Laughing all the way to the bank
all player contracts should be incentive based. La who ser
03/13/2013 10:59PM
1st overall pick next year
We can actually do it this year with Tavaris. Please...Suck...I would like to finally have a quarterback who will lead this franchise to the Super Bowl. 6-10, 5-11, 7-9, 8-8 just doesnt cut it because the really good franchise QBs when we pick at 10-14th overall, are either off the board or we pass them over because this front office cannot evaluate talent. we basically need a quarterback thrown into our lap.
03/14/2013 11:32AM
MAKE LIKE A MICHAEL JACKSON SONG AND BEAT IT!!
SO LONG,FAREWELL YOUR PRICE WAS WAY TOO HIGH!!!!
03/14/2013 4:07PM
Thank yoi
Thanks Fitz, I really appreciated your toughness and heart you showed on the field !! God Bless
03/14/2013 5:32PM
Another one bites the dust
I wish his accuracy wasn't so bad and we didn't need to say goodbye! Godspeed, Ryan Fitzpatrick. May your fingers not get stiff holding onto that clipboard for the rest of your career.
03/14/2013 6:03PM
No Matter Who's In Charge, The Bills Shoot Themselves In The Foot
Unlike championship teams like the Colts, the Bills never finish dead-last, so they never draft first. Look how much the NFL rewards you for being the worst, especially if there's a Peyton Manning available, or Andrew Luck, or RG3. You get the idea. This is a QB-driven league and if you don't have one you're behind the 8-ball.
03/14/2013 6:14PM
Never fear.....
Tyler Pigpen is here! Playoffs here we come!
03/14/2013 7:31PM
Thanks for the memories
I hated to see it come down to this. First of all thanks Ryan you are the closest thing to a QB we've had since Jim Kelly retired. I think you got shafted by bad play calling and hope you light it up some where in the NFL. That being said I think we should use the colts strategy when they sucked for Luck. We need to go 0-16 and hope Johny Football declares
03/14/2013 8:53PM
good number two
nice guy, would make a good back up quaterback.
03/14/2013 10:23PM
Good Guy
class act Fritz, wish it would have worked out.
03/15/2013 11:38AM
A Bills Fan in AZ
Fitz was a good QB, unfortunately not enough zip on the ball for the short or long accurate pass. I live in your hometown Ryan and am a Buffalo native, so I wish you success in whatever you do!
03/15/2013 2:18PM
Thanks Fitzy
Great guy, class act, fantasic leader, toughest QB we've had since Kelly. He will be missed by many. Really wish things could have been different and that he could have turned things around for us. Definitely agree with the comment on Fitz getting shafted by not only bad play calling but a terrible defense as well.
03/16/2013 2:24PM
From an ex-pat Pats country
It's a shame to see him go, but it had to be done. Who's gonna take a paycut to stay in a job they love? Would you still love it as much knowing that you took a paycut for the failure of an entire team? Quarterbacks don't win games alone and they don't lose them alone, either. The organization and the team failed and if Nix thinks all he needs is to pick up a Manning or a Brady and the wins will just come, he and the entire city are in for more disappointment.
