Bills' Gilmore shut down at Tuesday's practice

Pittsford, NY (WGR 550)  -- Throughout this year's version of training camp for the Buffalo Bills at St. John Fisher College, one of the constants in most of the practices has been the strong play of second-year cornerback Stephon Gilmore. On Tuesday night, however, fans of the team had to hold their breath as the former first-round pick was looked at on the sideline by trainers for around 10 minutes.

Gilmore, being attended to be head trainer Bud Carpenter, took off his right shoe and had the staff take a look at something on his foot. Even Head Coach Doug Marrone and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine came over to check on the Bills' top cornerback.

Eventually, Gilmore slipped his spike back on and resumed standing with teammates on the sideline. That was the only thing he did for the rest of practice, due to the team shutting him down from taking anymore reps on the field.

After practice, Marrone indicated the injury was nothing major.

"It was just a toe," the head coach concluded. "Just a re-taping and he should be fine from what I was told on the field."

Marrone even shed both his sneakers and socks while Gilmore was being attended to and pointed to something on his own feet for the second-year pro to look at. Despite the lack of practice time, the injury does not sound as though it will keep the cornerback off the field.

Only quarterback EJ Manuel, defensive tackle Jay Ross and outside linebacker Kourtnei Brown were the other members of the roster that missed practice time. Manuel is still recovering from a minor knee procedure and Ross was excused for the birth of his child. Meanwhile Brown was in pads, but only worked along the side with trainers.

The Bills have one more day of training camp on Wednesday afternoon, and then the operation moves back to Orchard Park for the remainder of 2013. Marrone will address the media for the final time in Pittsford at 1:30 pm.
