Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550) -- The Mike Pettine effect at One Bills Drive continues to linger.
Just days after Pettine accepted the position as head coach of the Cleveland Browns, it appears as though he'll be taking some of the defensive staff of the Buffalo Bills along with him.
The Bills announced earlier in the day on Monday that they had granted permission to the Browns to speak with linebackers coach Jim O'Neil about Cleveland's vacant defensive coordinator position. However, that wasn't the only name that appears to be heading across Lake Erie.
"Obviously Jim O’Neil was granted permission, he’ll be leaving to go to Cleveland as the defensive coordinator to the best of my knowledge," Marrone said. "Brian Fleury, who is a quality control coach will be leaving to go to Cleveland to the best of my knowledge as an inside linebackers coach. Also Jeff Hafley who really wasn’t here long will be leaving for Cleveland to the best of my knowledge, working with the secondary in Cleveland."
Other than that trio, only two others had ties with Pettine that inevitably helped bring them to Buffalo. Defensive line coach Anthony Weaver and assistant defensive backs coach Samson Brown also worked with Pettine previously, but only one of the two may be leaving.
"I spoke to him today and right now I don’t feel good about that, him coming back," the head coach remarked when asked about Weaver. "Right now with Anthony Weaver I’ve had a conversation with him today and again Russ and I had this conversation and it’s very important for us and this organization and this region, I think every fan and everyone out there totally understands that we want people that want to be here."
It was not immediately clear if Weaver would be leaving Buffalo for Cleveland like the rest.
Brown, as well as defensive backs coach Donnie Henderson and defensive quality control coach Jason Rebrovich will likely be the lone holdovers from the 2013 defensive staff of the Bills into 2014.
With the main job of coordinator filled by Schwartz, it's on to fill in the now numerous blanks along the rest of the staff as they get prepared to meet the off-season head on.
"As far as we’re concerned, Jim and I and the rest of the defensive staff will work together and bring the best coaches here," Marrone said. "We have a lot of good players on our defense. That’s not a secret, so for us we’re going to bring the coach in here that can best work together, that can communicate well and get the most out of our players. We have a lot of talent there."
Bills' Marrone expects 3, possibly 4 assistants to join Pettine

The Bills could always bring back Chuck Dickerson to coach the D-line.
For all of them that want to go to the browns; Means one thing to me that the browns are going to be a mess next year. Think about it New defense, new offense. So of course they are going to leave us hanging. Boy mike is that what you were saying to marrone; when you thank him for his help. something to think about. But hey they want to go let them. We don't need people who heart with the bills. Lets just go out and get the best man for the postion. Hello pepper johnson out their so is gill byrd. And marrone you get my respect. Because he don't want nobody here if they are not going to give their all. And he always sayes he won't this for the players and the fans. and i thankyou for telling us straight. In my book thats real coach.and hoping he become a great one we are pulling for you and the coaches and the players this year. lets go ruff buff.
Special teams coach needs to go- maybe Pettine would take him in a package deal with O'Neil?
Re: Thanksyou donnie
I don't know where to start. Spelling? Punctuation? Sentence structure? Alcoholism?
Not mad at all roll suckas
no serious loss at all these guys were average and they can be replaced,a lot of guys need the door opened for them so let them ride out....
Is this a pattern?
Special teams coach: bad special teams in Detroit, bad special teams in Buffalo, however it is implied that it is because of a lack of special teams talent on the Bills. Who's fault is that? And did the special teams talent really regress that much in one season? Leodis McKelvin was a threat every time he fielded a punt in 2012, what happened in 2013?
QB coach: Stafford throws for a bunch of yardage in Detroit and a bunch of picks. Unless the Bills are bringing Calvin Johnson in from Detroit as well which of the two is most likely to continue with EJ?
Schartz: Losses in Detroit more often than what shoud be expected with the talent level on the team. While there seems to be an abundance of excuses from One Bills Drive regarding every failure or not reaching goals let me throw this one out for Schwartz and the Lions.....way too much turkey consumed after the Thanksgiving Day blowout of Green Bay which resulted in a 1-6 limp to the finish line and had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that this was one of the most undiscipline teams in the NFL.
Spin DR. @ One Bills Drive: give him/her a substantial raise. He/She deserves it!!!
special teams coach just need more players
Well o'neil is gone and so are the other three. Its like the coach said if your heart isn't with us. then good luck with the browns. And moving right a long; Because the bills don't have time to be wasting on question. Like is they going to stay or leave. they are ready talking to the dl coach from the steelers. He has won a super bowl with them as a player, And that will be another great pick up. but i would not lie dehaven would be a good fit. But i feel if we put some strong players around him; he can get the job done. but marrone already said that the special team has to to improve fast with every body else.If that dosen't happen then we will see a change in coaches.
re; to thank you donnie
Well start with this. We won't be drafting a qb. I don't drink alcohol, I also don't get on the whiner line and cry about anything and everything. And who are you my english teacher? You want to see some real clear. Ok before you talk about any sport, then fool learn how to play it first. Then somebody already put you in your place. As long as the point got across is the point. This is not the spelling b contest. Now i know why they call you a idoit.
